Fuel Gauge Fogging up????
« on: September 09, 2008, 11:01:43 PM »

Hey all, Went for a quick ride tonight and noticed my fuel gauge on my pumpkin was fogging up. I haven't washed the bike in a couple a weeks and it has not been in the rain. All the other gauges are fine. Any ideas or am I just making a big deal over nothing? Thanks for the input.

had the same thing happen to my 06 SE ultra, dealer told me it was normal for the gauge to fog up, to which I responded you had better order me the other 3 gauges, since they were not fogging up, they must be defective.

"They all do it", so says the dealer and it is true. Had one replaced under warranty 4 years ago, depending on atmospheric conditions will continue to occur. My own theory on this has to do with the conduction through the copper wire from the tank to the guage in the fairing. The difference in temp and humidity creates the fogging, or something...any scientists care to lend a hand here? Thanks

Several have had this problem and it has returned even when gauge was replaced. As long as it clears up I wouldn't worry about it.

:confused5: Mine also fogs up on my 05 FLSTC and 08 FLHRSE4. Also had a problem with a digital oil temp guage on the '05. Changed it out 3 times and finally installed a dial type temp gauge.

Just live with it like the rest of us Ditch.  Mine clears up pretty quick when it does fog up.

I have had it happen as well.  It tends to happen when the temperature and dew point spread is relatively close.  i.e. temperature is 54 and dew point is 53.  Not sure why but it does go away without causing any problems.

I had the problem with an '04 Ultra Classic and the dealer indicated that it's a real problem to get the MOCO to cover it under warranty.  It never seemed to cause a problem with performance because I've never had a Harley fuel gauge that was much good anyway.  I pay a lot more attention to the miles on the trip meter than the fuel gauge.

Exactly, that's the only way to gauge it. :2vrolijk_21:

IMHO for what we pay for these bikes, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a fuel gauge or any other gauge to be spot on accurate and NOT fog up.  I know this has been a problem in the past and from sitting in a couple of "town hall" meetings with the the gear heads from corporate, this should NOT be a problem.
