Bearings skipping on syn is such a bunch of hooey. Anyone that's done even a little research should know that. I can't believe this mis-information is still propagated.  ;)

So, I hear HD Syn3 is a syn/dino blend.  Guess that would be the ultimate.

Did youze really expect me to believe I'd have anyone agree with me on this decision? ::)

Except maybe Hub, from what I've heard him say here. :2vrolijk_21:

But I've been running dino oil in every engine my whole life, until I got this bike that is. You've converted me on the Redline Shockproof Tranny Oil, and I REALLY like that stuff. The Redline MTL seems fine in the primary too. But never had one issue with dino motor oil in any vehicle I've ever owned. Not til synthetic have I noticed anything oil related at all. And the dino oil seemed to improve things. Ya'll think it might be another problem, but the bike runs great still. The running OP is perfectly normal at 40-45 psig. And if my hot idle OP stays at 10 psig, I see no reason to question this further. It'll only further support the thinning argument against syncrap!

Since I plan on changing the dino oil every 2K miles, oil breakdown doesn't concern me. And this chit is so much cheaper too! Changing more often won't cost me any more than I'm spending now. Funny how that dino oil was fine for EVERYONE, until the hype about synthetic became all the rage. Because it doesn't breakdown like dino oil, it allows you to keep it in longer. Beyond that, I see no other real benefit. And if it physically thins above 235 degF, I'd rather not have flat spots on my balls from it, or the racket the motor makes with that chit in there!!! ::) ??? ;D ;D ;D ;)

HEADPAN

I know what a panhead is, and what a bedpan is, but what's a headpan?  (Is it time to duck and cover?)

Interesting motor Mike. Usually see that on a kidney gen bottom, not a nose cone alt bottom! Nice bike! :2vrolijk_21:

hoist, just switched to straight 50 dino...like it already...less noise with the hopped up valvetrain and seems to rev quicker...maybe there's less aeration going on

IMHO If you change your oil and filter at 2500 to 3000 miles you will be fine with any quality Dino oil. If you want to stretch those oil changes you better be using Syn oil. I also believe you should use Syn if your pumping lots of hard use HP. The heat will get you every time.

There's a great tech article in the current issue of American Iron.  It discusses the differences between dino and syn and puts a lot of myths to rest about which oil is better for air-cooled v-twins. It's a good read and will open a few eyes maybe.   :nixweiss:  (Syn oil is stated to be better over any dino oil.)

syn definitely has it's advantages like longevity, heat sensitivity, etc...however dino may aerate (foam) less and when you're running aggressive cams and heavy valvesprings, a heavy straight weight dino will muffle the noise...some of the most well respected builders out there (hillside and r&r) recommend spectro or torco dino in all their motors

Howie, there.s two good articles in this months American Iron, first on page 40, is about oil coolers, but talks a lot about dino/syn. The second is an the 09 CVO's page 66.
