Had the same issue w/ dino on my TW 88. Going through Chitown, hot as heck, loaded down 2 up, sitting and burning up, oil pressure dropped to zero. Sit for 1/2 hour under a bridge and on down the road. Gotta believe that a good syn beats a good dino.

Ok, here's the deal. Today was in the upper 90's. Did between 85-100 for about 1-1/2 hours. OT was 241 degF. OP at idle was 10 psig. Rode home a little slower and it was hotter than hell out. Then got stuck in bad traffic on the GWB. Split lanes the whole way, but very slow go! Got home and OT was 249 degF. OP was 10 psig at idle. I know it's fresh oil, but so far I like what I'm seeing. Not keen on OT getting much above 275 with the dino oil, but I don't expect those temps anyway. I'd shut the bike off first if for some reason it got that hot! ;)

I rode all weekend as well. Oil temps got up to 265 in the slow mountain twisties. Running Amsoil, the oil pressure never got below 13 at idle. (Fueling oil pump). I gotta wonder if oil is your issue.  8)

Thick oil and sawdust will definitely quiet down those motors and keep your oil pressure boosted!!! 8)

Howie,
I have to agree with others.  I think there's more too it than just the difference between synthetic and dino oil. I've run synthetic in my bikes since they came out with it (I run Mobil 1) and have never had the issues that you're having.  I ride in some of the worse traffic conditions outside of NYC and that's DC rush hour traffic.  My oil has never gone above 280 and my oil pressure, with the stock 07 oil pump, continually runs right around 10 psi at idle, even with ambient air temps up over 100 degrees.  This is by far a much better level than my 02 Ultra had.  (At idle and in rush hour traffic, it would barely be above 0 psi.)  I remember back in the days when if you told someone that your Hog didn't leak oil, they'd ask you if you were running it dry.  I'm not sure you're not covering up a bigger issue/problem than oil here. Not a thing Smiler...it's great oil.  I use Mobil 1 for the same reason that Miker does;  easier to find when you're on the road than Amsoil.  Just about every auto store and a lot of WalMart's carry Mobil 1 V-Twin.  Just a case of convenience.

I'm going to have to go with the Syn crowd on this one. All the API test I've seen and the documentation I've seen show that Syn is much more stable a temp than dino oil. Dino starts to breakdown almost immediately when the temp is increased.  This is why they talk about extended oil change intervals with syn oils, they are more stable and don't breakdown near as fast as dino, they may not show noticeable breakdown for thousands of miles.

Mobil-1 with 30% lucas  oil additive....Took some Twin cam rattle away..70,000 miles and does not burn a drop.
I use the same in my evo..But ran Dino oil for 16 years with no issues either.
To each his own..Only reason I started to run Mobil-1 is cause of all the twin cam noise!!!! :nixweiss:

That is why we use it combustion turbines...Big serious machines with expensive results with poor lubrication.
I have much better metals results using synthetic...

Did youze really expect me to believe I'd have anyone agree with me on this decision? ::)

Except maybe Hub, from what I've heard him say here. :2vrolijk_21:

But I've been running dino oil in every engine my whole life, until I got this bike that is. You've converted me on the Redline Shockproof Tranny Oil, and I REALLY like that stuff. The Redline MTL seems fine in the primary too. But never had one issue with dino motor oil in any vehicle I've ever owned. Not til synthetic have I noticed anything oil related at all. And the dino oil seemed to improve things. Ya'll think it might be another problem, but the bike runs great still. The running OP is perfectly normal at 40-45 psig. And if my hot idle OP stays at 10 psig, I see no reason to question this further. It'll only further support the thinning argument against syncrap!

Since I plan on changing the dino oil every 2K miles, oil breakdown doesn't concern me. And this chit is so much cheaper too! Changing more often won't cost me any more than I'm spending now. Funny how that dino oil was fine for EVERYONE, until the hype about synthetic became all the rage. Because it doesn't breakdown like dino oil, it allows you to keep it in longer. Beyond that, I see no other real benefit. And if it physically thins above 235 degF, I'd rather not have flat spots on my balls from it, or the racket the motor makes with that chit in there!!! ::) ??? ;D ;D ;D ;)

I've been running Amsoil in my bikes for the past 10 - 12 years and have great luck with their oil. I've also ran Mobile 1 and Syn 3 on the same bike which means using the same temp gauge.  My scooter seems to run 10 to 15 degrees cooler than it did with  either the Syn 3 or Mobile 1.  Anyone here in California knows that difference in engine temp can make a  world of difference when its a hot day in Calif
