« on: September 11, 2008, 09:56:20 PM »

CNN at 10 pm thursday night is telling anyone living in Galveston Island or any coastal areas in that section of shoreline to GET OUT now or face certain death! If you know anyone in the Houston, Galveston area, please call them and tell them to watch the news now. The interstates will be impassable in the morning. Pray for everyone there, we dont need another Katrina.

This is a big assed storm...some 500+ miles across, and it's had a long time to suck up water.  They were saying a wall of water as big as 20 feet could hit.  Millions without power in Houston.  It's not going to be a good scene, that's for sure.  Anyone who stays on the coast is playing roulett with this one...

The NHC is predicting upwards to 20-22 ft surge in spots along Galveston Bay.  The average elevation of that area of Texas from the coast inland to about 80 miles is 6-10 feet.  There IS going to be a lot of flooding.  This could be a very nasty storm.

I'm watching this storm closely as my eldest son lives in The Woodlands Tx, just North of Houston. He's hunkered down and has bought water and canned goods. OH, and beer and cigars, so no need for me to worry. He just got back from several neighborhood hurricane parties.

Been to Galveston..... I would not guess the total population to be much more than 20K.  Looked it up - In 2005 population was over 57K.  Galveston is approx. 45 sq miles.

Anyway, the average elevation of Galveston is probably less than 10ft.  If the storm surge is 15-20ft, staying was probably a really bad idea.

I'm a native Houstonian and spent 24 of my 31 years on this planet there.  Anyone remaining on Galveston Island is a moron.

With that said as long as you are not in the storm surge range you are better off staying in place and securing your property. If your power remains off evacuate to a hotel or friends house that does.

Looks like it's not as bad as it could have been.  If I lived on Galveston no chance I'm staying.  My wife's cousin, 25 mi from coast evacuated to San Antonio thursday.  Took 2 hours to get a motel reservation anywhere.  I'll take a blizzard ANY DAY.  Might take some digging, but afterward, everything is intact.

Was just watching the news. Govonor of Texas says it is the largest rescue effort in Texas history. Some 140,000 plus did not evac when told. This was all over the Gulf Coast area. No word on any deaths as of yet! It was said it looks like a bomb went off in the area, I think that was in Galvaston.

My mom lives in Friendswood (not too far away from Galveston) and was fine even just got her power on about 2 hours ago even though her zip code was one of the mandatory evacuations.

It all boils down to storm surge the west end of Galveston that isn't protected by the seawall got absolutely eff'd by the surge.

Houston unlike New Orleans is above sea level the only real threat of storm surge flooding is on the east side of the town next to Galveston Bay.

Everyone on Galveston should have evacuated and everyone near tidal water should have evacuated everyone else should have stayed put and let those who were in harms way clear out without impeding their progress.

This is where the Rita debacle came back to haunt.  So many Houstonians have horrible memories of three years ago when 80% of the city lost it's mind and fled from a storm that wasn't even going to do damage thus getting stuck in 20 hours worth of traffic to go 200 miles. Yes that's 10mph average over the distance I know.

We just got blasted with the remnants of Ike yesterday. News says we had 55 MPH winds. I say BullChit. They had to be 80-90 MPH. We had trees uprooted and roofs blown off of houses. I think that was the hardest straight line winds I've ever witnessed. I thought the house was going to blow away. Power went off yesterday morning and came back on 9:30 or so last night. I was shocked to see it back on here, I didn't expect it this soon. The entire city of Clinton is w/o power so I'm working out of the house. We've got some customers with bucket elevators blown over and grain tanks caved in. We really didn't get hardly any rain out of it. They are saying there are 400,000 people w/o power in Ky. 30 miles south there isn't hardly any damage. I can only imagine going through 110 MPH winds and 40' storm surges.

Came through western NY around midnight last night.  Shocking how fast that storm covered 1,500 miles from Houston.  I had two garbage can lids blown off (recovered) and an aluminum chair in the pool along with half the leaves from the neighborhood.  Power was out to more than 20,000 people this morning.  Not a big event here.  Galveston on the other hand.........

Big wind, no fun....Andrew in 92 tore off a weather station anemometer for wind speed I had set up in south Dade county..

The span was to 150 mph, it got there for 10 minutes before it was torn off the location, never found nothing but 4 holes where the tap-cons were screwed in the concrete, don't care to be in one, never mind the water...

These storms are to be respected and if you don't have enough sense to get away from the ocean when it is roiling up, mercy on you.

Here is a link to pics.

It's BAD. I'm 50 miles NW of Houston with 2 trees laying on the roof. Firing up the chain saws.  :(
