Start Issue on 08 SEUC
« on: September 18, 2008, 12:59:23 PM »

My dealer is telling me they may have to tear into the tranny and starter housing to determine what maybe causing my bike to have start issues.(Puking through intake and hard noise coming from starter) from the backlash. I just had the 905 campain done and so I have new ACR's. I told him that maybe the ECM needs reflashed or the harness for the ACRs has melted but he assures me that the harness was routed properly and that the ECM was flashed with the ACR's on back when I originally had the SERT installed at 1000 miles. Well my concern is when they did the 905 campain I did not take my SERT tuner with me so they did not do any diagnostic work on the bike. Installing new heads is it necessary to re-flash the ECM??? I have to drive 180 miles and I don't want to get stranded in Phoenix. My local HD dealer is worthless so I go to Phoenix. I have asked them to just do the simplest troubleshooting first before tearing the bike down. Any idea's or suggestions would be helpful.

I would have them put a pressure gauge on each cylinder and find out if the compression releases are actually working.   With the stock cam if they are working the pressure should go from 220 to approx 150-160

If the compression releases are working, no need to tear into the motor yet, try a brand new starter a chrome one for all the problems and see if the problem is the starter :)

Let's say you have inoperable compression releases the first thing I would try before tearing into the motor again is

My suggestion would be to uninstall the race tuner software on a computer you/they have and then install the latest version 4.77 unless you have a super sert or tts.
Once you / they have done that, load the appropriate map and retest cranking compression and the releases.

The reason I suggest to do it this way is to ensure they didn't screw up and load a new version of the SERT over top of an older version which happened to disable the compression releases.   It will continue to do this with each version they put on top of it.   I know it happens becuase the dealer I was dealing with did this to mine.

With every new release of the SERT you were supposed to fully uninstall then reinstall the software.

Best of luck with your bike and this situation,

I too now have the same problem after the "fix" on my '07. Was completed 2 weeks ago along with a 50mm tb and 251 cams. Only pukes on  cold starts above 3000', but makes a hell of a mess. Had it dyno'd on a 95 degree day at 75' altitude so I am assuming that it may be too fat at elevation. I have a PCIII and have put on 2400 miles since the operation. FYI: the bike had 21000 mi with rear gasket leak, teardown reveled toasted rear acr and valve guides. We take it back to the dealere soon.

I've been having the same problem, but before the fix. It's in the shop now for the fuel shell, the 'fix' and to fix the starting problem. Supposed to be done tomorrow, they've had it just over 2 weeks now. I'll post an update once I learn what they did.
