Staying Cool
« on: July 16, 2005, 07:34:10 PM »

I'm preparing my bike for my annual ride down the US West Coast and over to the Vegas Bikefest & Reno Vibrations. Thought I would try to do something to keep a little cooler when I get there so I installed Kuryakyn's new heat shields and the adjustable Freedom Wings on my SEEG. I not sure yet if I will install the Hoppe lower vents, just don't want to cut into those lowers. I will try these next hot day and see how they work before deciding to install the lower vents.

I have attached some pics of both installed for anyone who is interested and some links to the products.

JC,
Wasn't it you writing last year sometime about some schmuc..... some guy contacting you about a heat shield something like that.  You or whomever it was had written that the guy made contact and then never followed through with a product for evaluation once it became known they'd actually be evaluated and talked about it.

I obviously don't look at the Kuryakyn website very often because I didn't even know they had something like that.  Does it make contact with your legs?  How does it mount?  Be sure and write again when you've got a good idea of how it works.

Thanks !

That would be this thread here........ http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=mkt_sell;action=display;num=1100136212

Very strange situation, for sure.  I do like the idea and the looks of the Kurakyn Freedom Wings (except I'd like the dark tinted or black).  They look like they'd help with getting more air flow to the rider and possibly to the motor, too.

Those heat shields, in my opnion, just can't be good for that rear cylinder......I'll have to pass on those.

Darrell, I notice you've changed your nice, custom made locking glove box covers.......where did you get those that are in the pictures?

Please give us a full review of your opnion of the Freedom Wings.

Do you plan to hook up with us for the West Coast CVO Owners GTG and ride during Street Vibrations in Reno?  Let me know and I'll shoot you my cell via a PM or email.

That's what I thought I remembered JC.  Just remembered that something about it seemed flaky.  About those Freedom Wings, I've had them on the red bike for just under a month now.  Had the fixed extensions that are stock on the Ultras on before that.

All the way closed the Freedom pieces do what the solid fixed Harley pieces do.  Not much difference.  The variable opening part is nice and the wings seem (so far) to hold their position where you put them.  All the way open you get a lot of air; which is nice.  And it's coming over you and the motor.  The airflow is, however, pretty turbulent.  It's actually about the same as the bike was without any wind deflector at all.  So the turbulence isn't "worse."  It just would've been nice if they figured out a shape that would both direct the air and keep it somewhat smoother (never fracking happy!).

Those pouches on the glove box look like the thing from E Glide Goodies.  They've been on the red bike since about day one.  Really convenient as common stuff and CDs are accessible much more easily than going in to the glove box.  I can fish a CD out of a pouch and swap disks going down the road and get the old disk back in the pouch, they're that convenient to use.  With those buggers on there only stuff that rarely gets uses like spare gloves and balaclava and other crap get shoved in the glove boxes.  But insurance ID and registration and CD and kickstand shield and other cell phone and a little other skinny crap is always in one of the two pouches.

The heat shield looks like it would cause high static pressure around the rear cylinder.

JC, for sure I will hook up with you during the Reno event. The bags that you see I had made to snap over the lockable lower doors. There is a key hole inside the bag so that the door can be removed without removing the bag. They mount on the doors with velcro straps that wrap around the door and fasten at the back.

I will let you know how the heat shields work if it ever warms up here. My legs don't contact the shields at all. Can't see how they would hamper the rear cylinder cooling, from the looks of them they would redirect the heat further forward when riding slow or downwards when riding faster. I will try to do some tests with & without them installed.

I would be real concerned about boxing in the rear cylinder since it runs about 20% hotter than the front.  My guess is that you are catching the heat from the front cylinder in that cup, and increasing the heat even more on the rear cylinder.  Keep listening to your engine, you might notice more pinging on accelerating under a load.  If you do, you might want to get those things off. I finally had a chance to test the engine heat deflectors and the freedom wings in some very hot weather. They both work and they work very well. The freedom wings can be adjusted to direct any amount of air on to the rider and I was surprised to see that they stay where ever you set them even at high speeds. When closed they provide the same protection as the fixed wings and they stay closed. The engine heat deflectors work even better. They direct the heat just ahead and to the right and left of the rider. I makes a huge difference when your stopped at a traffic light. I did a 700 mile trip this weekend in temps over the 100 F range. Usually when I role back into the city I almost die from the engine heat when stopped at traffic lights, not this time. The shields are a must have for me. I have yet to call Kuryakyn to see if what research they did, if any, on effects to the rear cylinder, as some have mentioned they feel it might be a problem, but I will.

Darrell, do you have any further update on these two items?  It's been a month.....I figure you've had opportunity for more hot weather.

JC, he'd written somewhere previously about a big September trip.  He might be gone for awhile.

I haven't left yet, I’m scrambling at the moment trying to figure out what to do - fly to Vegas/Reno or ride my K1200S cause the SEEG is definitely out. My bike was at the dealer for almost the whole month of August while they tried to resolve my wobble problem. Just got it out yesterday and did my test ride today.  (Will post all my wobble tests/results once the dealer gives me a listing of everything they have done to date.) Off topic but - I came as close to dying today as I ever want to get. In the past I have always been able to ease off the throttle (can't ride through it like a sport bike) and the bike settles down. Today it was a full wobble not a weave and increasing or decreasing throttle worsened it. I thought the bike was going to self destruct under me. It lasted for 2-3 minutes and I backed up traffic on a major highway while I slowly dropped to 80kph/40 mph before the bike settled down. I'm still shaking from this one.

I did get to test the saddle shields just before I took it in and again today although it wasn't that hot today. The shields are by far the best thing I have ever done with the SEEG. They make an incredible difference for me. I also like the Freedom Wings but feel that the saddle shields make more of a difference than the wings do especially at slow speeds or in stop and go traffic. I am sure you won't be disappointed if you decide to buy them.

PS: I have the Ride Str8 installed but it hasn’t helped my situation.
