58 MM fly by wire TB
« on: September 18, 2008, 08:42:26 PM »

I had the pleasure of holding a SE 58mm FBW throttle body in my hand today. That thing was huge! Could have tossed a golf ball through it. Are these not what come stock on the 08-09 110" CVO motors? If so, any reason it wouldn't bolt on a 96" 08-09? Just planning the ground work for my next scoot, an 09, 96" Ultra.
Thanks in advance for sharing any knowledge on this.

Thanks Jerry.
I had a guy telling me the 58mm I was holding came stock on the 09s.
Just trying to sift through the BS so I can stay current. Its helps when I'm trying to act smart.

looking at the diameter of the throttle blade on a throttle body doesn't tell the whole story...the '08 stock 50mm and the SE 50mm both have poorly designed manifolds...the 58mm is kinda new, haven't seen any flow bench data on them yet

Not sure on that gang. I think the Dynas and Springers still had the 46mm on them, in at least '08 anyway! ;)

Then I stand corrected. But a dealer wouldn't sell a guy one when he has it already, would he now? ::) ;)

the 50mm stock and SE 50mm are different, plus SE comes with bigger injectors...still has a restrictive manifold...hpi, kuryakyn, zippers, and latus are all MUCH better choices

While I had the Air Box off the new SERG this eve., thought I would check out a rumor of the TB flapper not opening all the way on throttle up.....

Well, I slowly ran the engine up to 5000 and the TB flapper barely opened up 1/3 of the way.

If I twisted the throttle, the flapper was responsive enough, just didn't open much.

Steve, (or anyone else) teach me something here, what's up with that?   :-\

Doesn't seem to me as though the ride is able to use the 50mm TB it has, stock anyway.

Can this be adjusted, with a Race Tuner??

Without a load on the engine, you can easily run right up to the rev limiter without going anywhere near full throttle.  So your test really isn't telling you what you want to know.  You will need to check the throttle plate operation under load, like on a dyno, if you want to see what it's really doing.

Also, keep in mind that the response is not linear...30% open could mean 80% flow, depending on a bunch of variables.
