2009 SERG Owners, Tell us what you think
« on: September 18, 2008, 08:54:11 PM »

I see several site members already have taken delivery of their 2009 Screamin Eagle Road Glides. Since I'm on the bubble for one, I'd like to hear what those of you already riding one think of the fit and finish, the motor, the trans, the ride, overall impressions etc etc. Complete A-Z rundown

Thanks

It may be a moot point now, anyway. I'm hearing from my dealer the '09 SERG's are extremely hard to get already and color choices...forget it...you get whatever Harley sends... :'(

Love it.  It gets tons of attention and is fun to ride.  Only issue is that the engine is held back big time due to the EPA crap moco installed (catalytic converter, crap exhaust, etc).  Other than that, the bike is freaking awesome.  Lots of potential with this one.  You just need to get in and tweak it to get it where you want it.

Hey Jim
Thanks for the response. Couple of specific questions.

Do the saddlebag extensions drag/hit on corners ?
How's the seat ?
Handlebars ?
What do you think of the new frame geometry ?  Does it handle better. Stiffer suspension ?

Spiderman;
I have a silver SERG that I just had the 1k service done.  I also own an 06 RG!  The difference is night and day!  If my 06 is a cadillac then the new one is a ferrari!  The new frame, suspension coupled with the low profile tires makes for a very tight and bumpy ride on side roads.  The seat also adds to this.  Its pretty stiff (this seat is also low profile).  On the other hand, out on the hiway this this is really smooth.  Much smoother than my other one.  It really likes the 3000-5000 power band and I know others balk at the supposedly lack of power but I feel this has got really good power.  At 75 mph a buddy with a RG and a 96 wanted to play so I downshifted to 5th and left him.  I shifted into 6th just as I passed 100 mph.
Fit and finish is excellent and I do not see the orange peel that another has talked about.  Lean angle seems better than my 06.  I have had it pretty far over without dragging anything.
The tranny is really nice but I hear that 5th gear whine that others have talked about since the 6 speeds came out.  On the other hand, its been smooth from day 1 and neutral has been easy to find.  The Hydraulic clutch and electronic throttle takes some getting used to when taking off from a stop.  Got to give it a blip before you use the clutch.  Also when its hot, the rear cylinder shuts off.  You will know it and need to blip the throttle to get it going before you take off.  More air is needed in the shocks than previous years.  I'm running 25 psi.  I absolutely LOVE mine!!!!!!

I thought the rear cylinder shut off was supposed to be manual - - ie: rider activated   ???

If you have it activated you can shut it down yourself or if it get to a certain temp it will automatically shut down...but you havre to be at idle.  It will not shut down if there is any movement of the throttle.

The saddlebags are low, so you have to be very careful backing up to curbs.  I get aggressive in turns and have not hit a bag or anything yet.  The bike loves cornering.  I drive out of my way to find as many curves as I can.  I just can't get enough of it.

Some guys complain about the seat, but I think it's fine.  MikeD recommended using the HD leather wax that came with the bike on it.  I did and the seat has been perfect for me ever since.  It just needs broken in to get the best ride out of it.  That said, however, it isn't a corbin or mustang.  You can certainly find a more comfortable seat after market, but I don't personally believe it is a must do replacement.

The frame is excellent.  I believe it is one of the best improvements HD made in a long, long time.  The 09's are significantly different than any other touring bike.  It is solid as a rock in corners and is very comfortable and true in straightaways.  I can put on the cruse and take my hands off of the controls for miles without a problem.

I second Jim's post!  Put that saddle soap on the seat!  and it ( I ) loves the corners.  I think taller people will have issue with the bars due to their low profile.  They fit me perfect!  I'm 5'6".

Did I see you on a Silver 09 SERG on Scripps/Poway Parkway last week in the morning ?

I've had my bike for about a month and like it a lot.  It's not perfect though.  The paint quality is disappointing...lots of orange peel although the paint scheme is very well designed.  From a handling perspective, it's terrific.  Very easy to toss around (for an 850 lb bike) and lots of fun to ride.  I put a Super SERT and slip on Rineharts and the sound is improved and so is the performance.  The power band is very strong and linear and I think once I replace the header pipe and eliminate the catalytic converter, it will be even better  I don't particularly like the fly by wire throttle.  There isn't a flat spot or lag ,but its just too sensitive.  The suspension is much stiffer than other Harley touring bikes I've owned.  The 18" wheels probably add to that.  It's great for handling, but not as comfortable on rough roads.

The throttle by wire is definitely sensitive, but I'm getting use to it.  What I like about it is the instant response.  You think about passing and the bike does it with zero effort.  It is a machine where the rider and it become one.  It feels like an extension of my body when driving it.

FWIW, the Super SERT enables you to change the throttle position to throttle butterfly ratio.  You can easily make it more sensitive or less with a quick download.  It takes a good tuner that knows what they are doing to get this right though.

I don't have any issue with the paint on my bike.  It may not be like something that comes out of West Coast Choppers, but it certainly looks good to me.  I've looked over every inch and haven't found any issue.  The color is even, the shine is blinding, and the striping is flawless.  I'm sure a pro could do better, but considering these are OEM bikes it's pretty darn good.  I've lost count of the number of people that have asked me who did the customization of my bike.
