Revtech Trans Gear Sets. Anyone Have Experience?
« on: September 20, 2008, 12:27:51 AM »

Had someone offer a Revtech six speed gear set that would fit in the 2000 Road Glide.  Price is very very reasonable.  About half what I found it it's cheapest listing on eBay to be.

Have no experience with these gear sets though.  Does anyone else?

Are they too expensive at any price?  Or an ok little gear set?

Don I know of a few people that have them. If you are not going to be abusive with the bike and build it up (HP) then you will be fine.

Thanks Mike.  I got a chance to put eyes-on the parts this morning.  Now understand the no-abuse suggestion.  It's got some skinny gears.

I have no intention of making the 95 in the Road Glide any kind of a monster.  But after cams and some top end touch up it should see 100 hp and 105 ft pds or torque.  Potentially even a bit more as it's only 5-8% below that now.

For $350 it's almost hard not to take a chance on the gear set.  It does not require alteration of the tranny case for installation as the SE kits do.  So could later go with anything else if it was a problem child.  The feeling of "bargain" would sure go away in a hurry if it crapped out a day or three away from home though.

Don,
Don't forget at times you might be pulling a trailer w/that bike. With a little motor work, and taking in the fact that you will at times be pulling a trailer do you think these "bargain" 'gears are going to be worth it in the long run. :nixweiss:

The occasional times with the trailer were even more of a consideration than just the fact of the trailer itself Gary.  Because when it's on I'm not local.  And if it craps out then it's even greater hassle and expense to get the equipment off the road and on to a (god forbid) dealer or back home.  I can't the bike and trailer in my bike trailer.  It carries one or the other; but not both.

Damn...  It carries one or the other; not both.  Until this moment hadn't considered one bike on the road with the trailer as a rationale for a two bike trailer.  Son of a bi............

Given the trailer epiphany I think it just worked out the other way Gary.  No saving but potential significanctly greater expense.  So I guess you're stuck for .01% of a two bike trailer's cost in beer or Makers...   Damn, sorry this worked out that way man ??? .

I would not run it in any bike of mine. I have had bikes with it in the shop and the are very clunky when you shift. Have also seen issues getting the bike into 1st gear from neutral. They tend to "grind" into gear.

Thanks Jim.  I'd never knowingly ridden a bike that had this installed.  Had never even eyeballed the parts until earlier this morning.  Really wasn't a robust looking gear set.  Lots of nearly square edges too.  Looks and function aren't always the same thing.  But the look wasn't one to give a guy the warm fuzzies.

The Sweetness of low price is soon lost after being stranded somewhere. Just A thought. If the price is to good to be true then it probably is not the bargain it appears. :confused5:

Already passed on the "bargain" BD  :2vrolijk_21: .  Seeing it in person was all the persuasion really needed :puke: .

For what it's worth, here's my thoughts.

My buddy has a nicely built custom bike with a RevTech 110 and their 6 spd trans.  It has a 3" belt drive to connect the two.

I've ridden this beast and it very much chits and gets.

The trans shifts very smoothly and I didn't see any issues with neutral or getting into gear.  I would think that RevTech would use the same design for theirs as adder kits.  I may be wrong, but I've heard this from several local people that have ridden RevTech equipped bikes.

Now as far as the squareness of the gears.  Keep in mind that what we have are constant mess gears in our transmissions.  All that changes are the "dogs" in between the gears, so the edges should have no affect on shifting.

I've not personally seen other 6 speed gears sets, so have you been able to compare the RevTech gear set with say a HD 6 spd gear set?  Putting a 6 spd in a 5 spd case will require some compromises to the gear widths.   You cannot compare the RevTech 6 spd to a new HD 6 spd gear set for a 6 spd trans, I'm sure there will be a big difference in gear widths.  Just a thought.

I bought a 6 spd Ulitma and was told that it would be good for up to or slightly exceeding 120 rwhp.  I have their 113" motor and 2" old school belt drive.  I'm sure that the Ultima trans and RevTech transmissions are pretty close to the same in strength.  I'm not going to baby this and neither does my buddy with the bike above.

I know it's your choice on buying or not and it could be a safety issue, especially if it locks up on you going down the road, but I've not heard of any failures with the RevTech transmission either locally or in reading forums around the web.  We have several local guys with them and they all do their share of banging gears from time to time.

I guess I've not helped much, have I...

If the $350 is all one can afford at the time, it may be a good alternative until another unit can be found.

Good luck on your decision.
