I need to go over the numbers with the owners of Uptown Cycle, but it appears that in order to gain the business of most members of this site, we would have to offer 15% discount AND free shipping. I'm not sure how that would work for large/heavy/bulky items where the shipping costs are $100. I certainly appreciate the candid responses and hope to make this work.

Stay tuned

i will just add this caveat to what the othersd have said...  maybe not free shipping but , esp in the case of heavy parts ACTUAL or realistic shipping.

many places will screw you on the shipping

good luck with this my friend

you have my money!

Discount is NOT the most important part of getting internet buyers.  Working with all the search engines and tweaking the search phrases is.  This will get you at or near the top after a web search.  Being on page 10 of a Google search result is the kiss of death.  Once the site is clicked on, the content and ease of use is PARAMOUNT.  Accurate totals and delivery estimates are a must.  Linking to UPS for tracking of orders and e-mail updates of backorders and order status are also nice touches.

Everything you said is true, Jim - and they are excellent points - except if the price isn't competitive the buyer will never get as far as totals and delivery estimates...  Ease of use will bring buyers back for more - but most will not pay a premium price for readily available items just for convienence...

No doubt Scott.  The lowest price on the web won't sell you anything if no one can find it.

I type this, there are 6370 members of this great site. I believe I'll start by gaining your trust, respect and business and we'll see where it leads from there. Given the responses to this thread, I'm going to start by trying the Priceline format. You tell me what you want and what you'd like to pay for it and we'll see if it works. Given the sense of fair play that pervades this site, I'm willing to give that method a shot.

As I see it 20% is a steep discount but if I  have to pay freight then on most things it doesn't pan out. One of the things I found with my tool store was that when someone is buying from an Internet stores they want it CHEAP.We spent all day quoting prices as low as 10% over cost [you'll go broke at that rate] and we were still to expensive. If I were you I would go no more than 10% and pay freight.
My question would be how do present your offerings over the Internet. Most wholesalers and Manufacturers have what is called MAP pricing and they enforce it fairly strong. MAP is minimum advertised price. If you advertise a lower price they can stop shipping to you or just pull your dealership. That makes discounting a little difficult at best. I think what you have to offer is good knowledge of product and ability to talk someone Thu install.
Good luck BD

As being a member of my local Hog chapter, our dealership gives us 20% off on HD parts and then 15% off on after market parts

I think ours is around 6% but that's on a loyalty card

Just a side note a Harley Dealer makes between 30% and 50% on most items BUT on t-shirts his cost is $8 and change , he sells thousands of them and no one ever asks for a discount on one.

That might drive you nuts Brian.  Every transaction will be a one-off.  And folks will find a way to compare.  So you'll sell Widget 245 to Bob Sr. on Tuesday for $9.  Then on Thursday to Bob Jr for $8.50.  Then on Monday Bob Sr. calls back in all pissed because he paid extra and wants the price difference refunded even though it was his own offer you accepted to begin with.  If I had hair I wouldn't after a month with the kind of chaos such a structre might deliver.

Given the variables of shipping costs based on location etc, I don't how you could do elsewise.

One of the things I found with my tool store was that when someone is buying from an Internet stores they want it CHEAP.  We spent all day quoting prices as low as 10% over cost [you'll go broke at that rate] and we were still to expensive.

This is sort of a thread drift, but it's interesting that BIGDOG is thinking of a retail store on another thread and brings this up here.  BD, what I quoted from you above is another thing my friends down here in FL told me about the difficulty of the retail part of their motorcycle accessory business.  They just couldn't compete price-wise with internet catalogs, not to mention ebay.  Plus, few customers wanted to go to their store, order something and then wait for it to arrive at the store, then go pick it up, when they could pay less on the web, and have it show up at their door in 5-7 days.

Since this is Spiderman's thread about a proposed internet sales venture, BB, I'd say to be sure you're able to compete with say, J&P Cycles and a whole bunch of other web-based sales sites that make it really easy to get what a rider wants, cheaply and fast.  I think going head to head with them with the same products is going to be very difficult.  On the other hand, I'd say you need to have something they don't, product-wise, that enough people want to make it worthwhile.  That won't be easy.  As much as I'd like to talk about customer loyalty and service, for most folks it's going to come down to price and delivery every time.

Red
At this point, I am in the exploratory stage. This idea germinated by me having a lot of idle time on my hands. My orginal thought was to provide a service to the members of this site and I am still thinking along those lines. I know it probably sounds hokey, but I am not going into this looking to support myself off it. Yes, I expect to make some folding money out of the venture and who knows, I have a few ideas for branching out on the back burner, but for now it is simply to act as a clearing house for all of the various vendors to members of this site.
