500 Mile Service?
« on: September 20, 2008, 07:32:59 PM »

I am at 500 miles on my new 2008 CVO springer. I have both a 2007 and 2008 owners manual (long story why). Both state that adjustments need to be made at 500 miles as well as a full fluid change. The dealer said that this service should be done at 1000 miles and has never heard of the service being done at 500 miles. The sales and service manager stated that there must be a typo in the manual. Both manuals are very clear about the 500 mile service. Has anybody run into this?? I don't want to have any reason for either the dealer or corporate void the warranty sometime in the future because I didn't do the 500 mile service. More importantly, I don't want to screw up the bike. Any advice would be appreciated.

Go to the H-D website Service Checkup enter in your VIN # and mileage and see what they say should be done to your bike. If it says something should be done at 500 miles and your dealer says there isn't any service needed then you might want to find another dealer. :nixweiss:

I had thought there was a 500 mile service for the Springers. :nixweiss: I tried checking for my bike ('04 SEEG) and it's only showing a 1000 mile service as the first one.

I just searched for "service" and "500 mile" on the Springer board and found the following posts/thread that mention a 500 mile service...

Finally "Very Happy" 105th SE2 08

It is well known by dealers in my area, as well as springer owners, that the first service is at 500 miles, just as the manual states. The reason is that the front end (springer) needs some early adjustment.

Normally I would suggest trying the service on your own, but with a springer it's a good idea to have  a professional do it... problem is who is the "professional"?

I'm surprised it's at 500 though!

The reason is that the front end (springer) needs some early adjustment and thats the only reason for the 500 mile, the rest of the service could be done at the normal 1000. IMHO

It wasn't all that many years ago that all Harley's had a 500 mile first service.  Between you, me, and the fencepost, 500 versus 1000 miles isn't worth losing sleep over.  Somewhere between those two figures you need to change the fluids and check for loose fasteners, etc. (checklist).  The Springer's are the only bikes that didn't change to 1000 miles for the first service, and as stated previously that is strictly due to the checks/adjustments on the springer front suspension.  Since a large percentage of the "techs" in dealerships these days probably haven't seen more than one or two springers in their lives, don't expect much actual checking and adjusting.  You'll most likely get the standard oil and filter change everyone else gets at the 1000 mile service, and not much else.

Suggestion: buy a shop manual and learn something about the front end.  They tend to be maintenance intensive compared to modern telescopic forks, which is one reason they were replaced by telescopics.  But they sure do look good, and if maintained properly they work pretty well also.

i think the modern springer set ups r not so labour intensive as older versions from 40s 50s, i dont see the techs taking the assembly apart to lubricate it, they probs give a spray of silikon lubricant were needed and thats that.

As was already said the 500 service is to readjust the front spring. Don't get me wrong as I like the Springer, but the front end is high maintenance. If you check I think you will find that the front end requires rebuilding at 10,000 miles. I saw a bill for this on an 04 Springer, $800. No big deal because I think it would take forever to put 10,000 miles on a Springer.

does the springer have different head stock bearings than other models?

i remember i saw a tech poster displaying the hours required for the various service periods, i^m sure the springer 10,000mile was only 2hours duration, so there is no way they r gonna strip the front end to service it. Comments please from experienced tech heads!

I will just echo what has allready been said. Ever since the intoduction of the twin cam in 1999 the 1st service has been 1000 miles, Except for the Springer which is 500 miles. There is more to the service than just "inspecting" the front end. The tech will also adjust the "Fall away" as well as lube the moving parts.

PROBLEM WITH THE 500 MILE REVISION IS THAT THEY CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER AND WORST OF ALL, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR SPRINGER FRONT END.....
That is a fact :-X
