It wasn't all that many years ago that all Harley's had a 500 mile first service. Between you, me, and the fencepost, 500 versus 1000 miles isn't worth losing sleep over. Somewhere between those two figures you need to change the fluids and check for loose fasteners, etc. (checklist). The Springer's are the only bikes that didn't change to 1000 miles for the first service, and as stated previously that is strictly due to the checks/adjustments on the springer front suspension. Since a large percentage of the "techs" in dealerships these days probably haven't seen more than one or two springers in their lives, don't expect much actual checking and adjusting. You'll most likely get the standard oil and filter change everyone else gets at the 1000 mile service, and not much else.
Suggestion: buy a shop manual and learn something about the front end. They tend to be maintenance intensive compared to modern telescopic forks, which is one reason they were replaced by telescopics. But they sure do look good, and if maintained properly they work pretty well also.
