Gone dead.(for 15 seconds)
« on: July 17, 2005, 09:01:39 PM »

I was on my 3rd leg of a 630 mile ride this weekend and just refuled about 12-15 minutes prior from a good station with 91 octane , and was peaking out over a hill @ about 6, 000 feet in altitude when the motor just went dead.
I was riding all weekend @75 MPH @3100 rpm mostly on cruise control.  Ran like a top all weekend.

The RPM went to zero, and no throttle response at all.  I cycled the Run/ kill switch to no avail...I pulled in the clutch and coasted for a while .. alll the time I was letting out the clutch in 5th gear to see if the motor would catch.  Nothing happened untill I reached about 20 MPH when it just came back to life... I really dont think it was the fuel and the air temp was very cool.(no vapor lock) .  The radio stayed on so it wasnt a battery fault and the battery is in top shape as well.  It never did it again for the next 150 miles(or ever before for that matter)

Anyone had a similar incident ?   [smiley=nervous.gif]

Thanks

LeRoy.

LEROY  Had a 97 Road King that had a short in the wiring routed on the lower frame going to the voltage regulator at the point were the rubber mounted engine shakes all the time. It would short the circuit breaker for a few seconds then go back to running. Couldn't tell you about the radio, didn"t have one. Good luck . don

LeRoy,

Not sure it is the same thing, but I had blown a fuse the bike died then restarted still ran and after more research found a bared wire that it only happened when the bike was leaned to the right hard to the right.   I went through quite a few fuses and a few visits to the dealership to finally find the errand short.

Have you checked your fuses to be sure nothing is burned.   Another suggestion might be that something got up in the fuel line and was blocking the fuel for a short time until the pressure / suction had subsided by it shutting off / no vacuum.

Did it store any error codes?

Also, did you ever replace that main breaker?  I think that problem still existed in the 04s and it could be come and go sometimes.  If you didn't replace you might think about doing it "just because."  As good a place as any to start for an intermittent fault.

LeRoy,  I had something similar happen to a 99 Wide Glide.  Motor would just cut off going down the road and then would start back up.  Found it to be a coil going bad.  Replaced coil, never happened again.

My 2005 SEEG acted similar last week. Have about 2200 miles on it. I was about 10 miles into a ride and all of a sudden it was like the kill switch was turned off for about 1-2 seconds. Motor came back to life and about 30 seconds after that I was rolling up to a stop sign and the engine died. After stopping I cycled the kill switch (off and back to run) and the bike started and hasnt acted up since. Im not sure if the kill switch was possibly not all the way to run as I dont use the kill switch to turn the bike off, I use the key switch.

All 05 SE have a wiring harness that is resting on the fairing bracket in the fairing. After putting 5200 miles on mine it rubbed enough to dead short the ignition/kill switch. When I replaced the fuse it blew immediatley when the bike was turned on. Bike was towed to Spokane where they found the problem and then moved the location of the wiring harness. I have been told that it is not specific for that particular wire, its getting others.

Not sure if this is your issue or not, but here's the service bulletin info on the circuit breaker.  I replaced mine before it acted up with a 50 amp breaker from the local NAPA store.  Cost my $8.00 and a half hour of time. I believe the part number is Standard Electric BR24.

Just glanced back at Leroy's original post and realized I'd missed something important the first scan through.  It's not the main breaker in his case because the radio stayed on.  If that breaker opens then everything is dead.

Twolane is right!
It's not the below, since it wasn't a total electrical failure.

Kinda strange, just got home and a recall notice from  Harley was in the mail. The 03 Dresser has a condition that ,,, and I quote
"These motorcycles have a condition whereby the 40 amp. main circuit breaker could open due to reasons other than for which it was designed, causing an unexpected interruption of all electrical power to the motorcycle. This condition could cause a "quit while riding" situation, which could occur without warning and ultimately lead to a crash.

Damn, wish they had told me before I put 21000 miles on it!

If it is not the main breaker any other Ideas??
Thanks for working your skulls about my little problem that could have been a bad mishap.

P.S.
How do I check for error codes?

You know you have an error code when the icon looking like an engine in the speedo comes back on after you start the bike.  It will stay on for a few seconds and then go back off.  The dealer can get a code number off of your odometer window and that number will tell them what triggered the code error.

I rented a 04 Ultra last year and it died on a road trip out west. When the dealer set the bike up from the factory they didn't hook the wiring harness in that is behind the left saddle bag. The harness was dragging on the drive belt which finally cut the wire and left it and me dead in the middle of New Mexico. It was an adventure!!!

Damn!  What happened to the rear harness that didn't just pop a fuse(s) for the stop/running/signal lights.  Losing the rear lights shouldn't kill a whole bike out in the boonies; that's just a wrong thing for a bike to do to you  [smiley=nervous.gif]

The light extinguishes after the ignition is turned on as it should and never comes back on after the engine is running.

I find it amazing that it could just die like that and NOT trip a error code.  Is that the only indication of an existing code?

Thanks , and be careful out there the "cagers" are ALWAYS trying to kill you ...but then again so are the dogs, elk, deer , and antelope...LOVE Montana , hate hitting anything other than bugs on my 103.
