Go with this, or hold out for new one?
« on: September 24, 2008, 01:53:05 PM »

OK, I'm still wavering between buying a used '00 SERG off Ebay or going for the brass ring and picking up a brand new '09.

Here's the one I've been looking at on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=150296424615

Only downside I see if the mileage.  Is 34k too many miles?  If I can get it for $12-13k would that be a decent price?

Advantage to buying an '00 is they came with the tour pack, lowers, and passenger and rider's backrests.  New ones don't come with any of those (except the passenger backrest)...but I'm a stickler for maintenance (and cleanliness), and I'm not sure I want to buy an almost ten year old bike...but I'd like to ride it all the time (even in inclement weather) and I'm not sure I'd ride as much with a brand spankin' new $31k bike.

So what do you guys (and gals) think?  Does this one look good or should I hold out???

I think that I traded my45,000 mile '00 O/B/W SERG in on an '09 and am glad I did. The old bike was classy, smooth and almost everything I could want in a touring bike.  The new one just blows it away in every category except for the obvious missing items (tour pak and lowers.) Would I do it again - you betcha.

I say go with what your gut tells you, however, I personally would choose the 09' CVO Road Glide...wait, I already have one! Consider the improvements (new frame, 6-speed transmission, saddlebag extensions, ABS with brembo brakes, tires, cleaner looking rear end with integrated lights, 6 gallon fuel tank, CD/MP3 player, 18 inch wheels) and decide if the cost difference in getting a brand new bike that nobody else has used is worth it to you.

Its not like you are getting half the bike for half the money.
It is now a modern classic with the new serg out.
At $12kish,  as long as the paint is mint, mechanical stuff is no big deal.

That 00 is iconic and other than gear cams and little puff n stuff it would run, great looking ride for the money.
I woulds still like one for my stable....

JMHO.

Disclosure: I am waiting on an 09 CUSE4.

I just looked at the one on Ebay. It looks like it should be an awesome bike. current bid is 10,500 and it appears to have NO reserve. My bike has a little less miles on it but no way would I Ever Sell it that cheap! It's an awesome bike and being the Original Screamin Eagle it will Always be Collectable, with good resale value.
That being said; I vote to buy Both. How awesome would those 2 SE RoadGlides look parked in your garage! (I know, Not gonna happen. But it would be cool!)

Raaze09,  the '00 is beautiful and certainly a good investment.  I've ridden several and they feel just fine.  If you intend to ride a lot and keep the bike, I'd vote '09.  It's a much better ride and may be a classic as well.  Neither is a bad choice.  If you're going to ride in "inclement weather," ABS is a very nice feature to have!

I will be anxious to see if this bike sells or gets pulled especially if the current bid holds

So having looked at the ad, it sounds like the general concensus is this probably ain't a bad price?  Even with 34k miles?  I expect the bids to climb over the next couple of days.  There are a couple of blemishes, but they don't appear too bad, and he has most of the original stuff (but he changed out the crash bar and bag bars for black ones, and changed the exhaust over).  So it's nearly complete.

As for riding in inclement weather, I'm not worried so much about the safety aspect as the clean up required after getting caught in the rain (and it rains a lot in Cleveland!). ;)

I had the same dilemma last year and instead of buying a new RG I bought a used 00 SERG and haven't regretted it for a minute. You get a much more complete bike for half the cost and have about the same power as the new ones. The only issue with the mileage is the cam chain tensioners and that is easy to check and fix. Another thought is to wait till next year and possibly have a complete touring option with a water cooled engine, but it would way cool to have both the first dry SERG and first wet SERG. :2vrolijk_21:  Doc

this is just me, but I would go with the 09.  For the extra you pay, you also get alot more bike.  More everything.  This is a bike that you will keep for a long long time so do it right the 1st time around.

just my 2 cents.

Obviously there is only one correct answer to this situation, buy both of them.  When you own a Harley, it's always a good idea to have a backup vehicle available.

Two bikes is a good plan, but just doesn't work for everyone.  When it's good, it's great.  When it's bad, it's twice the frustration.
