Vance and Hines Big Shot Duals
« on: September 25, 2008, 10:50:40 AM »

Have just taken delivery of a set on V&H Big Shot Duals for my CVO RK.
They will not be fitted until the engine problems are sorted, but at first glance
they look as though they could be rather loud.

Have also got a set of the 'quiet baffles' that go with them - and intend to fit.

Anyone any experience of this set up - ie neighbourhood friendly?

Cheers

I have the V&H Quiet Baffles (part number V21869) in my V&H Straight Shots and can say that they do take the noise down considerably from the V&H "Cheese grater" baffles that came with the pipes.  Now, how much in decibels I can't say.  But IMO, they take it down enough to not anger the neighbors.  Unless, of course, you rip the throttle over and over.  They will also provide a noticeable uptick in low end torque and not affect the top end much if any, IMO anyway.  Seat of pants opinions here.

A tip I would offer is to wrap the fiberglass packing in wire of some sort prior to inserting them into your pipes.  Just six or eight laps or maybe some sort of hardware cloth large opening screen mesh.  This will help hold the packing in place longer, as it tends to loosen and blow out pretty soon if you don't.

I'll second that on the baffle material, I just sold some slip ons and I went through 2 sets of material all over my bike! Wire mesh of some sort is absolutley required.

It doesn't do it on my buddies bike, but his is a 96. I think the velocity and volume of air in the 110 helps blow out all the material...Not to mention the way the heat melts it and it all ends up at the back...

I've stated it here before, if you V&H pipes on a 110, pull out the baffles and check it out.

On the upside, packing material from V&H is only $6.95 a peice.

I have the V&H Big Shot Duals on my 08 SEUC.  The original baffles were too loud for me.  Changed to the quiet baffles and added fish-tail tips.  As mentioned above, the quiet baffles helped with the torque a little and helped with the volume a little.
Just got an idea:  I need to try the wire thing with the fiberglass - might help.  Only problem is that it isn't easy to pull the baffles out.... especially on the left side.

IMO, these are great looking pipes and I really like the fish-tail tips I added.  From a strictly performance stand point,.... I think they are pretty weak.  I have thought about trying V&H headers and some good slip-ons to see if there is a noticeable difference in performance. :nixweiss:

Colcop, read the EGT thread and make sure what ever wire you use will stand up to high heat or you may have a mess!

I have the V&H Big Shots True Duals on my 07 SERK , I removed the "cheese grader baffels" because didn't like the sound of them and have been running Thunder monster baffels for about a year and love the sound and they helped on TQ & HP, As far as the db's have no idea, just hope i don't find out in Myrtle Beach next week. If i were you, think i would wait until you install them on the bike and listen to them before making any changes to the baffels.

I installed a set of big shot duals on my SEEG after burning up a pro-pipe. what a let down..!! great looking pipe, but absolutely killed the performance. I knew getting away from the 2 into1 was going to be a factor but I didn't expect a 12-15% loss...

I've always ran 2 into 1, but I wanted a change. Big mistake. I replaced the standard baffle with quiet, barley any difference in performance, but did sound better. Tuned and tuned and couldn't get the popping out of it completely...

Overall a great looking pipe, but V&H will tell you, there's no performance gain and they may actually cause a loss of performance.

Lesson learned...don't buy these for anything over a 96" motor unless you plan to throw in cams and aggressive tuning. Stay with what works...thunderheader, fat cat 2into1, pro-pipe or if you have to have duals...RH or Bubs..

V&H Big Shot Duals on my 07 SERK. Had them put on before i picked up bike from dealer. Best looking duals on the market and they sound good. Installed SERT and had it tuned. Plenty of power.

Hi All,
Well my engine has at last been rebuilt.
Now has 10.5 pistons, welded and trued crank, 251 cams, 50mm throttle body, billet cam plate, timken bearing conversion,
new rocker arms and quick change pushrods, heavy breather and the SERT, new berings throughout and a new oil pump.
The Big Shot duals were fitted and I heard them for the first time today LOUD!!!
Found out that the dealer had not fitted the 'quiet baffles' despite my having taken advice and reinforced the packing with wire mesh.
They were so loud, that they would not even road test it - reckon you could have heard it on the other side of Singapore.
The quiet baffles have now been located and should be fitted tomorrow.  Hope they make a difference otherwise I will have a
nice set of pipes - may make a good wall decoration!
If they have to be replaced, any idea as to a very neighbourhood friendly exhaust system.  I have to ride out of an basement car park with an up ramp.
As an indicator - V&H Moster Ovals are considered loud here............
Many thanks to all who have offered advice previously.
Happy Xmas :drink:

With that build, do yourself a favor and lose the duals. Get a D&D Fatcat with the Quiet Muffler. You won't be disappointed! They make a left side "falsie" if ya can't handle the look of a 2:1. ;) :2vrolijk_21:

Hi,
Well, having experience with V&H pipes, I know how loud they are.  I put the quiet baffles in the Big Shots Long that I had on my 02 Ultra.  Toned it down to be acceptable in neighborhood traffic, but still barked loud when I snatched the throttle.  The QBs make it difficult to get a true A/F reading, since the probe cannot be inserted all the way into the pipe.  Drilling a hole through the plug in the QBs negates the purpose of the QBs, so your only other option if you get the QBs is to sniff through the O2 bungs.  Nice build, but other than following Hoist's advice and getting a D&D, I'm not sure what else to say.................other than I love the D&D Fatcat on my new build.   :2vrolijk_21:
