Dealer says I cant change my handlebars on 2008 FLHRSE4
« on: September 25, 2008, 11:00:07 AM »

Hi,
I want to change my handlebars on my Serk annie.I like the look of the wild one 518's but the problem is my local Harley dealer says it's a no go because of the abs set up.
Thing is i'm sure guys on this forum have changed their bars on 08 FLHRSE4's.
Does that mean they lost their abs facility or is it that the dealer is wrong?
Would greatly appreciate any advice on this.
Thanks,
Paul.

I changed the bars on my 08 SEUC with ABS.  Went with the WildOne 575's (as recommended by folks here).  No problem.
Change the bars yourself... it's  not as big of a job on a SERK as it is on a SEUC.  You will save yourself a bundle of $$$.  There are SERK owners here that will talk you through it  :2vrolijk_21:

My guess is that the dealer did not want to mess with it since you wanted after-market bars

What would changing the handlebars have to do with affecting the ABS brakes? It doesn't sound right to me.

The bars have no affect one way or the other on the ABS, but they do affect the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control).  I assume the aftermarket has bars by now that work with ETC. :nixweiss:

Spot on.  I reckon the dealer didn't want to change lines - everything else works.  Apparently, Moco won't allow dealers to chop and change lines???? :nixweiss:

Jumping into this tread: I purchased a set of heated grips for my FLHRSE4. My dealer said they wouldn't work, even though it calls out my bike on the package. I asked to have the wires run internal. THey said we'll try it. They spent a day with the bike and called me to say they can't be put on.

Load of s*#t or real deal? Anyone done through this on the SERK? I see the '08 Ultra has them stock...and there not even fat bars!

I installed Wild 1 10.5 apes on my 08 SERK. No issues either. Still might change out to 12.5 or 14.5" this winter.  :mango:

FWIW, at the end of the product description for every heated handgrip in the latest P&A catalog, it states: "Not compatible with internally wired handlebars." I wanted to install a pair on my my SERK, too.

Yeah, I know, I just don't believe it. I've done a hundred things to my bikes that the dealer or packaging says can't be done. It just can't be done in a packageable, easily offerd through the MoCo way. IMHO- If they can add all that crap to the Ultra's bars with heated grips, and it's a narrower bar than the RK, which doesn't have radio control wiring etc., it should aughtta fit.  :soapbox:

Hi,
Thanks for all  your replies.
Perhaps as LRebel says I should give it a go and change them myself!
It would save me a fortune. The dealer gave me a quote before he realised it had ABS and it was £600  [$1100 approx] which did not include the labour costs :o.

I think my Wild1 0575's were about $190....... $190 vs $1100  :nixweiss:

Go for it!

That explains it.  Over in UK, they don't deal with after market bars like they do here almost daily.   :nixweiss:
