Exhaust Gas Temps (EGT) How high?
« on: September 25, 2008, 12:19:58 PM »

I did a search but must have spelled wrong.

Anyone know what the EGT and head temps for a 110 can reach? In Fahrenheit please...

I don't know that anyone here has ever invested in the technology needed to measure exhaust gas temperatures at the head, but I do remember reading some threads on the '07 models where folks measured head temps with an infrared thermometer.  One of them will most likely see this and jump in.  All I know for sure is that since no one has had a head actually melt yet, the temp has to be under 1220.666 °F (melting point of aluminum). ;)

Sixer, I measured the metal temperature of the cylinder head an 2007 110' at the area on the rear cylinder aft of the spark plug. Many measurments were taken trying to gear a correlatioon between metal temperatre and tuning parameters.

I picked this point because I also use it when tuning my nitro burning mini rc's, they melt fast if mistuned.

Stock, the metal temperature ran at 400-380 degress F.  After a sert tune, 2-1 pipe, Mobil Vtwin oil the metal temp ran consistantly 40 degrees lower, rather dramatic.

The running parameters were all similar hard running, heavy traffic idle hot weather. Oil temp dropped from 245-250 to 220-230.  This bike has not leaked to date at ~8k miles.

The missus 2006 dyna at 88 cubes ran metal temps in the 340-360 range.

Chances are I will again on the 09 if it ever gets here...Similar pipe and tune before and afters...

Thanks Miker, we all talk about how hot these things get but I was just wondering what the actual temps were.

So am I to Infer that the EGT heading down the pipe is equally as hot or no?

EGT is, in my business as a boiler tuner, is the true egt, around 1450 F.
I have had new machines , gas turbines, at 2200, hastalloy cooled with 900 F  steam.
Metal temps on a old fashioned siamesed, rod V twins...I dunno.
My 1935 VLD runs head metal temps at 360 or so...on straight 60 wt dino oil and had for 70+ years...

So Miker, my next question, and the meat of what I am trying to find out, how hot is the EGT at the mufflers? On my V&H slip ons baffles the insulation would start melting after 10 miles of replacement.

If the true EGT is around 1450 degrees entering the pipe, then it should be rather hot at the mufflers as well correct? Hence, that is why it is melting the insulation.

Would there be any negligable difference in heat between a 110 vs 96/88?

I can't say exactly on a bike but on my diesel pickup the EGT is around 250-300 degrees at idle, which I would imagine would be about the same on any internal combustion engine, and about 600-700 at normal cruise on the highway.

But when I get on it the temps can spike at 1500 deg  :o   I need a bigger turbo.

If you lug an engine the EGT will go up a lot, compared to winding the rpm's up. The more air you get in the cooler the EGT.
