Compression releases ??
« on: September 27, 2008, 06:38:03 PM »

I have a question about mechanical compression releases, I understand that you push on the release before you start your bike to release the compression but does the release stay activated for a length of time or is it only to release the initial compression in the engine before start up ? or do they stay open for a few revolutions, or do they stay open until the bike fires up and then close ??

Are the electric automatic ones any different on how long they stay open or is the automatic part only control when they open and not when they close ?

Thx

In theory yes, you push the button before you start the motor and they close on the first upstroke of the cylinder. In practice, you have to keep them lubricated or they stick and will remain open for several RPM's producing a rather alarming hissing sound. Never had one stay stuck, but I suppose it happens. I can't tell you anything about automatic ones as I don't know anything about them.

Manual CR's close after the first or second compression stroke. The HD auto releases stay open until the engine fires. Aftermarket CR's like S&S uses are wired to the starter circuit in which case they stay open as long as the starter circuit is engauged.

Yup, HD dude is right. They are simple and easy to fix if they break. They save your starting system big time if you have done motor work...

If you go really high compression i would recommend Bobby Wood's releases as they dont close too early.

They'll pop closed as HD Dude said. But mine only do that when cold cause of what B B said. Gotta lube mine, cause I either have put a load on the motor, not just rev it, or manually pull them up right now! Yeah they're supposed to pop out in theory, but they will also stick. Never stuck under load though! EVER!!! ;)
