To me, the best idea for a tax is a National Sales Tax. Everyone buys stuff. The more money you have the more stuff you buy. I buy a Chevy, I pay a couple thousand in sales tax. You buy a Maybach, you pay twenty grand in sales tax. It'd be interesting to see if some of the Leona Hemsley types would buy Chevys to avoid the sales taxes.

Flat tax or national ONLY sales tax either one can work.
I'd still buy the GM or maybe a Dodge or egads, maybe even a Ford!

Make a lot - pay a lot. Buy a lot pay a lot, they both work, just not both of them.

Perfectly clear. My concern is the people in charge will finally figure out either one is a good step, but the "if 1 is good 2 must be better" mentality could cloud their judgement.

I believe that the only reason we don't have either or now is because the feds realize it really would be in the best interest of everyone.

I also believe that anyone receiving government assistance (and I'm not talking SS here) should "earn it"

We need to limit what you get out of the system by what you put into the system.

Now there is the most intelligent response posted to this situation, thus far.  There is nothing that can be added to it, with the exception of what my Dear Ol' Departed Pappy said, before he left this Cruel World.  "If your expenses exceed your income, your assets in jail."  Each and every American Registered Voter, with the intelligence to turn a light on in the dark, should write, call, or e-mail his or her, Local, State, and Federal Representatives, and tell these elected officals exactly how you feel about how this Great Nation is being governered.  535 or 565, of these elected officials are making, and enforcing, and presenting new Laws that 300,000,000+ of us have to abide and live by.  I do it, but I'm just one voice in the darkness.  I do it constantly.  I'm a Small Businessman, but I have more than 100 Employees, depending on me and Gary Kale for their livelihood.  We don't take that lightly.  The mess we are in has been created by the Kennedys, Rockefellers, Boxers, Waters, Jacksons, Sharptons, Rangals, Obamas, Byrds, Rahalls, Schumers, Franks, and the list goes on of these liberal c##ksu##ers, that have ruined this Great Nation with handouts and chit like affimative action.  No body gave me a dam quarter.  I worked for every dam dime of it.  And my GOVERNMENT does everything it can to take it away from me.  They are anti-businesss, and that's a natural fact.  Dam it, stand up and be counted.  Quit laying back and saying chit like "Ain't this a dam shame."  DO something.  If you don't, you are Anti-American, and you deserve to go down the tubes with the rest of the sorry a$$ed population.  >:(  I'm mad as hell, and I aint gonna' take it no more!  Vote 'em OUT, dammit!  >:( There endeth the lesson. Later--HUBBARD

Good post.

Sad think is about 40% of those eligible to vote, do not pay tax, and will vote for the party that panders to them with hand outs, and entitlements.  The party that will pick them up, take them to registar to vote and vote all on the same day courtisy of ACORN

I know as a Canadian if I chime in I could be asking for it but we depend on tour economy too.

I think the bail out is crazy. Taxpayers will bear this burden not the people who benifited or created the problem.

Laws regulating Wall Street and the Banks are made by politicians to line the pockets of there family and friends. Somehow this must be changed for the future.

Things like intersest only mortgages should not be allowed.

A recession does not weed out weak companys its kills small business owners who provide products and services we can afford when the economy is good, thus making the economy grow. [more people work more people have money to spend]

A national sales tax is a bad idea. This I know first hand it just gives the politicians more $100 bills to light their cigars with.

I agree, the bail out was stupid to say the least.  The market was up 300 plus points before the vote on friday for the bailout.  After it passed the market closed more than 100 points down.

You are correct, the politicians, and the people who benifited from the sub prime will reap the benifits.

Interist only mortgages should not be allowed.

Stop the sub prime loans

Stop the 100% mortgage financing, these people have no vested interest and its to easy to walk from the loan.

Stop the 120% home equity loans, see above

It also was not just the poor people who took advantage of the sub prime.  Many people took out the teaser rate ARMS to buy a 250K home when they could really only aford a 150K home.  They were hoping home value would go up, or they would get a big promotion or pay raise.

Do you really think that if corporate taxes ended tomorrow we would see a price drop even within a year? Consumers get accustomed to prices and don't look for a drop.

Exxon Mobil - record profits in the history of the world and yet gas has still gone up and over $4 a gallon.

We will never be away from being taxed, all we need to do is make it fair - flat tax for everyone.

You make a little you pay a little, you make a lot you pay a lot (ind if it was a fair number the "lot" would probably be less then the pre-loophole rates).

I would just like to see this country keep our money inside our borders. Stop giving it away to the rest of the world that hates us but tries to sneak in at every opportunity.

And stop selling real estate to overseas interest's

Well, I really never think when I post, but that is beside the point.

Yes on that - no corporate income taxes - zero - would result in a price drop.  It might take a year - it might take less.  Why would taxes drop?  Competition.  The income taxes paid (or any taxes paid, for that matter) by corporations are merely included as a line item in the cost of goods sold.  This cost is passed along to the customers of that corporation, who are the ones who actually pay these taxes.  The corps do their best to minimize these taxes, but in fact the ones who PAY them are the customers of the corporations.  Plus a profit margin on TOP of these taxes.  Prices are driven by competition & the cost factor  determines price points - not the other way around unless it is a monopoly or similar.

Exxon Mobile is in the 6-8% range of gross profits - a little on the low side for a commodity.  BTW - consider the TAX burden of gasoline - the fed & state take in WAY more revenues than the oil companies from the last figures I saw.

I like the Fair Tax proposal better than a flat tax - neither has a chance in hell do to pork in Congress & lobbyists.  Both parties but especially the Dems HATE these ideas.

Our trade imbalance is a long term problem that nobody seems to care about.  Sending $700 billion overseas while we sit on vast oil reserves untapped - idiotic.

Limitation of foreign investment overall is not a bad idea - speaks to national security issues zmong others.
