Fargo is on cable tonight for about the 10,000th time. Believe it or not, I never quite understood what it was that got Bill Macey's character in need of $750,000. Maybe it's my hearing and I never heard the whole jist of the phone conversations regarding the serial numbers on some cars. Help anyone ?

I guess it's never truly disclosed.  I haven't seen it in over 10 years but you have my interest up now.  i may just hadd it to my Netflix que.  I just sent back "War of the Gargantuas"

Aha and all this time I thought I was dense. So we never really know why he needed the money, just that he was in deep chit over some missing cars from the car dealership his wife's father owned which he worked at. The thing about it that I never could figure though is what he did with whatever money he got from whatever. I guess we can assume he sees himself as a financier and of course he's a dolt, so he must have had some deal he schemed up go bad and sold some cars from the dealership to a fence and - - - ah the hell with it.  I've watched this movie a dozen times and it seems that the only character that is defined to any degree in the whole movie is the lady sheriff (Francis McDormand)Since the movie is based on a true story, one wonders if the money that got stuffed in the snow bank by one of the bad guys ever got recovered - - or maybe that was just Hollywood's version.

I think he borrowed money from the bank, saying it was to buy more cars for the car dealership, but invested it is some investment that flopped. The bank wanted vin # for the new cars he had bought, but since he hadn't really bought any cars he had none to give them, so he came up with the idea to kidnap his wife and get the money to repay the loan that way! That's what I got out of it, but it's been a couple of years since I watched it.

Helping with memory He had a Business Plan to buy some property and build a Building on it. His Father-in law, Owned the dealer ship and had another business partner as well. He brought the Plan and presented it to his father-in law and they Laugh him out of the office (however) they said it was a good idea and they would give him a finders fee , He had gotten the Money for his plan from GMAC finance, therefore that's why they needed the vin numbers of the cars , Which he Faxed a bad copy or was telling them he would fax it out by golly.

Of course the Price was driven up when the Kidnaper's got angry and pissed off, you know the funny looking little guy.
