Automotive question
« on: October 02, 2008, 10:34:09 AM »

I bought a boat and a car and left them in Maine before I drove back to Dago so I'd have transportation and toys to play with next year. As noted elsewhere, I am down for a new 09 SERG from an H-D dealer in Maine. Anyway, my question is this. The car I bought is a 97 Caddy Deville. Florida car with no rust, perfect leather interior, everything works. Very solid car for $2k. The only issue with it that I can see is the valve covers are starting to leak. Given that this is a Northstar V-8, is that a big deal to change ? I mean in the old days with carbs, you just pulled the plug wires, a couple hoses and changed them out yourself, but the top of this motor is completely shrouded and it's got a really low profile. Looks like the valve covers are buried under the EFI rails and a bunch of other stuff. Any advice so I can save a few $$ and do this myself ?

Just looked up on Mitchell Labor Guide and the job calls for four (4) hours and shows that it as a C tech job. If you are mechanically inclined it is not a bad job for the DIY. The gasket set includes the spark plug grommets, NAPA part # VS50524R (Fell PRO) list for $98.12 and dealer cost of $57.76. Total cost in a reputable shop would be around $400. , and dont forget to change engine oil and filter at the same time.

just let me know if you need WFP M/C Moving Company to transport the new SERG to Dago!  You will then be ready for your first 5K Service...I will handle the break-in.  give give give!

Thanks, for the advice. Were it an H-D, I'd probably do it myself, but for the $300 labor charge vice my potential for screw-up I'll shop it out.

If I do the deal, I want LD in Maine and the new SERG out here. I have no idea if the spinal stenosis is going to get a lot worse quickly or what, but if I am able, I will ride LD to Maine in the early spring and bring the SERG home in late fall. Don't care if I can only manage 300 mile days, I'll stop, visit with my brother and sister site members and take two weeks each way if I have to. Given the fun I had these year east bound and the one day in Joplin west bound, that wouldn't be a bad thing.

All the better to spread more BB joy and cheer.  I know our small family loved you stopping to visit us while you were on your way North.

BB,
If this is a "summah cah", you're better off not even worrying about it.  How many miles do you really plan on driving it?  A little leak won't hurt anything!  Sh$t, our HD's been leaking for 105 years!  Especially up back o' Bangor, if it ain't leaking, it needs oil!

That was one of the best things about talking to you during the summer Brian. Your accent got better the longer you were there :drink: .
