Transmission Noise
« on: October 05, 2008, 06:14:05 PM »

I just got back from a week trip down to the Columbia Gorge.  The weather was awesome.  Before I left I installed the Hawg Wired system - 4 in the front and amp.  THE SYSTEM IS AWESOME!  In reading all the posts before I decided to buy I think 2Lane said it best - You hear things that weren't there before.  I bouhgt the system from Jim (hd-dude) EXCELLENT SERVICE  :2vrolijk_21: THANKS JIM!

Now I really notice the whinning of the transmission in 4th and 5th gear.  In 6th gear 75mph at 2900rpm it is really loud.
Maybe it has always been there and since I was listening to the Hawg Wired and the clarity was so good I just finally heard it but there  is definitely a whining.  Of course now I hear it all the time.

Has anyone has this problem or had any work done on there tranny to solve this?

Hey T MAC
I have loud 5th gear but 4th and 6th are quiet. I have talked to several people about amsoil and they have said it reduces 5th gear noise. It also handles heat better than syn3.

Off topic I went down to previously discussed dealership to get fuel shell recall and warranty items done. I was treated like dirt. When I asked for a ride to a restaurant so wife and I could get some lunch, I was told to call a cab. It cost them more than me though. I was going to purchase an extended warr. and my wife was packing around about $300 worth of hd stuff that I made her put down. I will never set foot in there store again.

Sorry about not stopping by but it was a one day trip. Coho ferry on reduced hrs. Caught Nanaimo Ferry at 5:15 AM and P.A Ferry at 515 PM.

T

My 07 CVO Ultra had the quietest trans of any bike ive owned, even the straight cut 5th gear was virtually silent, My 09 CVO has a slight wine in fifth gear when backing off the throttle, but cruising at 60 mph is no louder then 4th or 6th, I ride with several friends with 07 and 08 machines and none have loud transmissions, there is some justification for fifth gear whining slightly but there is no reason for your 4th and sixth gear to make any noise, regardless what your dealer tells you they dont all do that.

O sure you ride the Gorge and didn't even call for back up :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: .What a nice ride. My 08 had a noise 5th gear think it's normal.
As for VI48's comment regarding the dealer I am not surprised and that is exactly why I starting the shop. Those guy's just do not get it they're still back 10 years when you could treat customers like dirt .

Sorry to to hear about your experience with Legend.  There is no reason a dealership should treat you this way.

I hate we missed each other also when you are back down this way shoot me a pm and hopefully we can meet.

We moved our trip up 4 days because of weather.  We were supposed to go down on Wednesday Oct 1 but left on Saturday Sept 27.  The weather was NICE!  We had 2 - 90 degree days and 2 85 degree days.  We rented a house through hood river rentals Leslie and Libie were great to work with if you ever get down that way.  The house  had a great view, garage for the bike and all the amenties of home.  I took my mom and dad, the twins and our two dogs so we were running out of space ;D.  We still need to hook up I went for a ride on the spur of the moment a couple of weeks ago I think it was on a Monday.  I saw a bike that resembled yours at the rest area just this side of the turn off that takes you back to Bremerton (I think its hwy 3) it is right past the casino and I have been meaning to shoot you a pm to see if it was you.  I almost turned around but we had a late start as it was.

We will have to keep an eye on the weather and if we see a good day coming try to meet for lunch.

You have a target date for your new shop yet?

i agree with all your posts above, 1993 and earlyer five speed trans (big twins) had a big time whine in 3rd and 4th gear , the fix was belray 85/140 sny that cut the noise in half sometimes more. it took the factory fourteen years to fix the problem by changing the pitch on the main drive gear and the counter shaft fifth gear. the samething applies to the new six speed cruise drive trans, 1st and 5th gear are stright cut like the five speeds, and have a sloopy pitch, try the belrey and it shoud help. and in about ten years the factory will have a fix. (sorry about the sarcasm)   axil

My experience has been they all whine in one gear or another, and clunk going into gear like an old Tractor.  HD Transmissions are still bulletproof.  Mine has been whining in 4th gear for years.  Run it 'till it breaks, then fix it.  I'll bet you never have to fix it.  There endeth the lesson.  Later--HUBBARD

TWOLANE, nice chea pet on the drain plug. what happened?

It broke :huepfenlol2: .

Ok, a bit more than that obviously.  Weird thing is that it never made an unexpected sound until it turned loose.  Then going about 45 on a little country road not under acceleration or load there was a sudden snap and it locked up.  Solid.  Enough of a lock up to flat spot the back tire.

Never did know what the first failure was.  Guess is a cage on a bearing on the mainshaft that was broken and dropped needles everywhere.  But it was just a guess.  Too much damage in it to know for sure.

Twolane the funny thing about yours was it never made a sound till it was time to go south.

Everyone I know (very few though) who has had a trannie problem always heard it before it went! And usually not your expected whine.

I put Redline synthetic in at my 1000 mile service, and I can not tell any difference in any gear. None whine. I think a high quality trans oil does make a difference, probably more than syn crank case oil, though I use both.
