2009 Engine Noise
« on: October 08, 2008, 04:55:35 PM »

Was just curious to see if everyone else is hearing it.  My first CVO experience so I may be asking a dumb question.  Seems like there is quiet a bit of engine noise, but that is the same thing I thought of when I purchased my first HD.  After I put the pipes on the noise seemed to go away.  But getting back to the 09.  Seems that the lifters seem to chatter quiet loud at 3000 rpm's. in 2nd and 3rd gear.  Is this normal for the 110's or maybe the lifters in my engine need some adjustment ?

I'm just tossing this out for the sake of discussion, but new motors are generally noiser than motors with 2,500 or more miles on them. While modern machine technology allows for a lot closer tolerances than 20 years ago, it still takes a bit of time for all the parts to get to know each other (for lack of a better expression) So far as I know, the CVO 110's come with Syn3 in all three locations, so the gain factor in swapping out the as delivered dyno oil for synthetic isn't really there on the CVO's. AMSOIL and others do quiet things down a bit more as well, but overall, unless the dealer failed to set-up your bike and do all the pre-delivery checks, you shouldn't be having any mechanical problems this soon. My advice. So long as everything runs properly, I'd give the noise factor some time before you go running back to the dealer with it.

My 08 SEUC has engine noise around 2800 rpm.  If you ask a HD dealer, they will tell you it's normal.

Someone here actually posted pictures of their rockerboxes showing an imprint where their lifters were hitting the inside of the rockerbox.... That's not normal.

I will be taking my bike in for the HD "product improvement program" this winter.  I have already talked to the SM and he said that he will take care of the problem when they install the new heads..... we will see

I have the noise or rattle from 2700-2900 rpm in most every gear. Above and below that no noise. I dropped it off for rear head gasket leak for the update, I declined the new heads as mine were already worked over by Dan Baisley in Portland Ore. Anyway when the HD shop took them apart they were full of oil, Seals leaking also a valve in the rear head was stuck bad. So I picked the heads up yesterday and brought them to Dan early this morning he had to pound the valve a couple of times to free it. He said never had this happen before so will work them over and call me in a couple of days.

Is this your first bike w/lowers? The noise will seem different (louder) w/the lowers on then a bike that doesn't have them because the engine noise is bouncing of the lowers and back up to you.

I think once in awile I hear a little lifter noise in my cuse4 but nothing to get me concerned yet, maybe it is a little noise travaling from the lowers,it does seam to happen in that rpm range, going to give it alittle time

mine was pretty quiet for the first couple hundred miles and then it got loud.  i was told there was no adjusting the valves because the lifters were hydraulic.  guess one of these days i'll have either open up the manual or take a look inside to see for myself.

There are no valve adjustments (setting valve lash) required with these motors! If you've installed adjustable pushrods, they'd need to get adjusted, but not for valvetrain wear like solid lifter motors. ;)

A whining first gear?
A whining 5th gear?
A whining operator?

Scary, yours is just like mine!

Cool!

Careful you'll hurt my feeling... :D
Sides I didn't say anything bad, it is what it is.
As long as it keeps it's oil inside itself and runs, I'll be happy.
But do you notice that 1st gear syncro noise?
Just a noise, afterall there is all sorts of stuff spinning around in there.
You should hear the 4 cam vl.

One thing I have noticed is the really loud CLUNK when you drop it in first gear.
