License Plate frame & Inspection Decal
« on: July 28, 2005, 02:35:32 AM »

This may not be a big issue to many, but has anyone taken off the stock license plate frame and used some aftermaket unit? My 05 SEEG would look so much nicer/cleaner if i could bolt on a nice frame, but with this bracket you can only use the top 2 mounting holes.  Also I don't know what all the different state regs are but in Texas we have to have a inspection sticker. Where is everone putting these so there not so noticable, but on the ride to keep it legal???? [smiley=confused5.gif]
Thanks all......

Does Texas specify where the inspection sticker has to be?  When I lived in Virginia, it had to be on the fork slider.  If Texas gives you more flexibility than that, take a look at the J&P Cycles catalog.  They have chrome plates made for inspection stickers that can be mounted to the top or bottom of the license plate bracket.  I assume they could also be mounted elsewhere.

Here's a link to the J&P site - just scroll down, they have several different plates for inspection stickers.   http://www.jpcycles.com/groups.aspx?LID=585829b6-c699-48aa-831d-9d5c9f45a1d6&DID=16e9a56a-b431-45a7-8a90-682bc875a90c

I'm here in Tx also - I think the sicker has to be with a certail proximity of the plate. Buddy of mine has a sidemount plate near the back of the primary case and the sticker is on a seperate plate on the on the softail swingarm.

My son is an inspector, I'll call him and see what he says (I'm on a conference call to Malaysia right now)...

Talked to my son - he said the inspection sticker has to be in the same proximity as the plate. He also said this is subjective by the insector, but if they can see the sticker when looking directly at the plate, it will pass.

I don't know if this will work for you in Texas, but this was the cleanest setup I found.  It is made by Kuryakyn, and shows no mounting bolts.

Really like how clean that looks Striker.  Like the shape of the inside cut out too.  But it looks kind of disproportionately wide; at least compared to what I guess I'm used to when thinking about a license plate.

Hmmm, something to think about though. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

There is a routed out section inside the outer frame that the plate sits in.  The total dimensions are only 1/2 " bigger than the plate itself.  I got it because it has all hidden hardware.  It actually comes out to 1/4" larger than a standard frame. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

That's interesting Striker.  From the picture it just "looked" wider than that.  Optical illusion, bad eyes; something.  It is a nice looking piece though.

Striker, That looks great..... Do you use the stock SEEG mounting frame, or
does it have its own?

Hey Striker, do you happen to have the Kuryakyn part number for what you got there.  I looked for it last night before going to bed and either I was too pooped to find it or just didn't recognize it for what it is.  Sorry for being a dummy.  But if you've got it I'd appreciate it.

Here it is in Dennis Kirk's catalog, I could not find the actual number from Kuryakyn.
I had to drill 2 holes in the backing plate to fit it to the factory mount

I guess in New Jersey our plates are not quite as wide.

Your frame is the same size as the plate, if you compare the position of the plates on our 2 pictures they are about the same in relation to the tail-lights.  The difference is the frame on mine, about 1/4 inch on each side.
