Yes there are two Mobil 1 oils. Mobil 1 V Twin 20w50 is for your Motorcycle. And so is the good ole' dependable 20w50 dinosaur oil, cant go wrong there.  Just change it every 3K miles and your good to go and so is your wallet

Used to use Aero shell 100 (50 wt) (aircraft oil) or 120 (60wt) when it was hot this was in the Shovel. Not sure if there is an update to this as I would assume the aircraft oil has been upgraded to synthetic as everything else. Last time I tried I couldn't find the Aeroshell. I also used it in my plane which had a continental engine, air cooled, pushrod with roller bearing bottom end.

You can check out here - Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 for info. Many of us here use either Mobil, Amsoil, and or Redline most anything is better then the Syn3 from the MoCo.

Had some troubles with the Amsoil it seems to make the seals hard, I have seen this before in additives that have seal swell or similar ingrediants they soften the rubber and seals but over time it goes the other way. Since I have switched to the Mobil 1 Vtwin oil the seals seem fine, although I sure would like to try some good ol Aeroshell just to see what the difference would be in this new engine as I used to swear by it in the past.

This topic has been kicked around the site on about 50 different threads since Obi-Won started this website 6 years ago. There are at least 5 different products which will perform extremely well when used in all three locations (motor/trans/primary case) All have different properties and various site members have preferences based on what they feel best suits them. Mobil 1 has the advantage of being the most readily available synthetic which can be used in a Harley-Davidson, so it is a good choice if you travel around the country. AMSOIL seems to be universally acclaimed for quieting down valve train clatter. Redline is the brand of choice for many used mostly in the transmission case and Royal Purple is the choice of the speed demons for it's low friction characteristics. Many members also pefer Syn3 since it is recommended and sold by H-D. The only thing I can say from my own perspective is that AMSOIL, Mobil-1 and SYN3 are the only products I would run in all three locations. Redline has a high sulfer content (yes Virginia, synthetics are actually just dino oil with added polymers) and sulfer is bad for your clutch plates.

As far as regular car oil versus motorcycle oil, the only major difference is that the motorcycle oil has slightly more Phosphorous and zinc, anti-ware agents, than car oil, but not much. Car oil can only have a certain amount of phosphorous because it can harm the catalytic converter, which may also bring in to question using bike oil in the new 09's with the converter on them. Anyway there have been many test done between the two and the motorcycle oil hasn't shown any less ware than the car oil, so it's really not worth the extra money you spend.

Here's info about this issue.

B B,

You mention Redline has Sulphur in it and it is not good for clutch plates does that include their MTL or just their HD Shockproof and Motor Oils? I have no labels to look up the composition

Thanks,

A couple years back there were a bunch of studies with charts etc that were put up on the site. Maybe the d00derator can help you find it.
