Reflector between luggage rack and taillight
« on: July 28, 2005, 09:50:14 PM »

Has anyone replaced the reflector on the bracket with a LED strip?? If so, where did you get it? Only one I have found so far is from Signaldynamics, that is  pretty close in size but has  visible mounting screws,  was going for something that had an adhesive mount.

Have the turn signal  brake controller and a BackOff module - something about not having too many lights that tell the cagers your stopping or turning.

Thanks

That reflector was the first thing to come off my bike when I brought it home. Right after that were the ones on the front forks. Never did like reflectors.

Never thought of an LED strip though. Post some pics when you get it done. I am interested to see it.

May have to go with the BackOff version and use chrome bolts.. All of the others I've found so far are recess mount or a minimum order.. Tx requires a certain amount of reflector on the tag area for inspection, can put the nappy round recflectors on there for the actual inspection.

Was thinkig this would be cool since the BackOff unit has dual intensity LEDs for running light and brake - beside, would blend in. Think I'll call them toorrow and talk to one of thier tech guys to see if this all works before I spend a bunch of bucks and time on something that will end up in the bottom of the parts box.

They came off mine too! along with the PIA seat strap. I think it was in the first 30 minutes of ownership!

This isn't exactly replacing the reflector but here is what I built using the Signal Dynamics LED strips.  This gives me running lights, brake lights and turn signals by hooking into a Tail Bones unit.

Rather than mess with the reflector, I added an LED tail/brake light to the bottom of the tour pak.  Wanted to use the H-D spoiler, but it sat on top of the stripes on the lid.  The unit I found is from Rivco products in Wisconsin - follow this link   https://helene.affordablehost.com/~rivco1/store/index.php?id=61
There is a connector under the seat that you can use to power the light without any other controllers besides the one that comes with the light.  You will need to buy the matching connector and terminals from H-D.  I'll try to post further info this evening if anyone is interested.

What I would really like is a nice chrome light bar with LED's, 18" long, that could be mounted on the rear face of the tour pak.  So far I haven't found anything suitable.

BobP - What did you use for the mounting block you attached the LEDs to?

TRC - would be interested to see what you did as well.

Sorry GRC - should have taken typing instead of auto shop...

Looks like I'm going to have to spend some time coming up with a mount that doesn't look like an after thought. Then will have to make a few in the hop and see how they turn out...

Jim,
I built the "U" shaped LED mounting bracket out of 1/16 in. extruded aluminum.  I then used tape to form dams for the corners and filled them with JB Weld so I could round the corners and paint it black.  There is a steel plate in the bottom of our Tour Paks that bolts through the bottom.  I removed the nuts, added 1/2 in. threaded stand-offs and bolted the bracket to the stand-offs.  This approach avoids drilling any holes in the Tour Pak.  Here is another shot that shows the shorter LED strips on the sides.

I like the looks of that, can you post some pics on the electrical.  Do they not supply any type of bracket?  Are they assuming that it will be mounted in the tour pac?
Did you set it up so you can unplug it without removing the seat?
Thanks

I used a 6" (40 LED) strip on the reflector bracket. Bought the light and the convertor to make it run/brake from Biketronics. Works out pretty good, ran the wires thru the left strut cover, bought a new 8 pin connector asm and made "insert" that plugs in between the oe wiring connector (a male and a female) on the rear fender under the seat. I also bought the 12" (100 LEDS) and mounted it just under the tourpak lid and also connected it as a run/brake function. It is VERY bright.  Had lots of positive comments on them,  12" unit comes with either a clear or red tube to house the leds, it comes 18" so you can actually put in 3 inches of led turn signal in each end and have a 1 piece unit, i only used 12 center section w/o turns. They attach with provided two-side moulding tape and are flexible and very secure.

This is my near-term solution for additional lighting on the rear of the bike.  The LED light bar is from Rivco  https://helene.affordablehost.com/~rivco1/store/index.php?id=61  and it comes with a small module that is wired in to provide dual intensity (tail / brake).  I ran the wires into the bottom of the Tour-Pak and connected them and the module to a homemade harness that runs with the Tour-Pak light harness to a connector under the seat.  This is the connector that is used for the lights on a full size T-Pak, connector number 12B, 3 wire AMP multilock.  It is found in the same bundle with the antenna.  I had to slice the sheath over the wires and splice in (solder and shrink tube) a short extension to each wire so that the connector would be accessable with the seat installed.  If anyone wants to wire additional lights, this is an ideal way to do so.  Just ask your dealer for the connector and terminals for connector 12A, 3 wire AMP multilock, page B-49 of the shop manual wiring diagram.  Hopefully this description plus the photos will make sense.
