smoke out of pipes when starting
« on: October 13, 2008, 07:40:00 AM »

My neighbor has the 07 SEUC and just had the 110 recall,I noticed smoke coming out of his pipes,is this a matter to be concerned with? He feels that his fuel mix is running a bit high and that is the reason. And he is stock on his pipes and fuel mgmt system.

If the engine and exhaust are cold it is normal for condensation to cause white smoke as the moisture turns to steam.

Should be steam and not smoke if this is the case. Moisture in the engine will cause steam from the exhaust from a cold motor but it will dissipate quickly, just like from a cold car engine. Smoke that lingers is not good and could be a sign of valve seals or piston rings not sealing properly.

Black smoke = excessive fuel at startup.

Grey/white smoke that lingers = oil, look for leaking valve stem seals and/or worn valve guides allowing oil to drip into the combustion chambers.

White smoke that quickly dissipates = water vapor, normal on cold starts.
