Is this what they mean by detachable saddlebags???
« on: October 13, 2008, 12:00:57 PM »

I was out riding with my lady this weekend. While making a sweeping left hand turn I heard what I thought my floor board was dragging. I knew I was not leaning nearly close enough to be dragging. I let off the throttle and decreased the lean. However the road did not agree with this tactic as I was committed to lean to stay on the road. Again I heard the dragging.

A quick look down past my ladies left leg and I found the problem. The left front pin had "detached" allowing the bag to pivot on the rear pin until the leading edge of the bag was able to touch pavement. Thankfully there was minor damage and I did not lose control of the scoot.

The front bracket bolt loosened up allowing the bracket to turn which detached the pin.  Just passing this on for other to be aware. I will be looking into a better system for attachment as I only want the bags to detach when I so desire!

The ends of those pins will twist, spread or bend.  Have also seen the bracket bolts come loose before.  So eyeballing the pins and laying a wrench on the brackets are part of each oil change here.

I take the bags off every time I wash the bike is how I check to see if they are loose. ;D

There's a short list of things I lay wrenches on along with the general eyeballing I do during a walk around during oil changes.  Just do it while the oil is dripping.  Takes maybe 10 minutes.  But it's a fair trade to not have deal with things like muffler or head pipe bolts or saddlebags coming loose on the road.

I can unfasten/fasten mine with a coin. I have, however, a very short, chubby screwdriver in my tool tether for this. I look at the fasteners each time I use the saddle bags, but I have never thought they would come loose from wear. So I'll have to check that better from now on.

The wrench is for the bolt that fastens the saddlebag bracket to the frame. The rear bracket stayed on got scratched up. If not the bag would be history.

BD, Louis was talking about using a coin with his because the international bikes are different than the North American production.  Assuming this hasn't changed; for some (stupid) reason their saddlebag pins don't have the round wire bail that we use to twist them with.  Only the slot in the end of the pin.  That's where they have to use the coin or screw driver.

Fortunately, you got hella lucky, Brother. I think that could have been much more serious. Which would have ended in yet another warning label from the MOCO. I am grateful to hear of this now, and I'll be checking every time I ride or clean.

Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, that is the way it is. I actually did not know that there is a difference with this part between U.S. and HDI. I have ridden many E-Glides in the U.S., never had to take the saddle bags off, never noticed anything. Makes you wonder what the reason for this may be ...
