Yes, that is the way it is. I actually did not know that there is a difference with this part between U.S. and HDI. I have ridden many E-Glides in the U.S., never had to take the saddle bags off, never noticed anything. Makes you wonder what the reason for this may be ...

Louis, I don't have a clue.  Never understood what requirement might exist to cause the difference.  But the international bikes are a pain in the arse in comparison.  Domestic production has the same pin but with a nice easily handled bail on the end.  No tools needed.  Int'l production is just the pin.

Here's what the US pins look like:

Depending on how heavy handed a mechanic might get that is working on your bike, sometimes these pins come back in a less than desirable shape.  It is best to always check your bags after your bike has been worked on by other than yourself.  I know that Harry (Unbalanced) had one of his original Cherry bags fall off his bike, while he was underway.  It was a costly undertaking to have to purchase a whole new bag, hardware, etc.  I know for my and my husband's bike, we have had to buy a few replacement pins after having the orignal ones pretty much destroyed by someone else.

I keep a spare pair of pins among my carry parts along with fuses, exhaust nuts, relays, breakers, etc etc etc.  One well rounded ziploc of relatively common easily replaced items to save a day's ride or avoid screwing up a vacation trip.  A dealership's wrench would very likely never get the chance to over-twist them on my bike though.

On the rare occasion my bike would have to be in a dealership for something I'd take off the bags, tour pak; whatever.  Wouldn't leave anything on they might accidentally screw up.  Give them the bike as bare as possible to get done whatever job they might have to do.

I'm a slow learner.  You also have not left your gorgeous tan seat on a bike for someone to put oily, greasy, non riding body parts into either, right?

That's right Candy.  Only time my bike sees the shop is the occasional tire change when I don't have the time to yank the wheel off.  Guess it would also go in if something had to be run on Digital Tech.  Really only necessities though.  But on those occasions everything removed that can be removed and black seat on the bike.

I remember how many times the local ship dinged Mobe's bike.  I know how many times they've done something to Ghost Rider's.  And a few others also.  For ten minutes time taking stuff on and off it's just not worth the risk of making it even easier for them to screw something up.

It also gives them less paint to scratch. THE MUFFMAN

Uuuhu. I see. Thanx for the picture, that looks much nicer indeed. As to the difference, I do not know what to say. It seems utterly stupid and hardly explainable. Just as we have come to expect ...

This may some weird, but when the occassion arises that I bring the SERK to the dealer, I remove the bags beforehand.  Less likely tofind scratches etc , less finger pointing.  Especially with the leather bags and upgraded locks, no one knows how to open them and add scratches from fingernails in the leather.  Leave the bags at home.

Found out something from the parts catalog.  There is a parenthetic notation next to the standard pin (with the bail) that reads "not for sale in Germany."  So strictly from that it seems that Germany has some peculiar/particular proscription and because of that requirement all the int'l production is adjusted accordingly.  Still don't have a clue what problem the bail might cause though.  If I had an int'l bike I'd get a set of the other pins though.
