Paint or Replace?
« on: October 13, 2008, 01:34:36 PM »

My 29 year old son has found what seems to be a good deal on an 05 yellow SEEG.  The bike has some damage - looks to be all cosmetic.  The current owner calls it "fall-over" damage.
From the pics, it looks like minor scratches on the left side - TourPak and Saddlebag.  The outer fairing has some more substantial damage and will have to be replaced.

So my question is:  Should my son find a good used outer fairing and have it repainted, or should he try to buy a new outer fairing from HD already painted and ready to install?  I have to wonder if a painter could match the flame pinstripe on the Nanna :nixweiss:

MSRP is $737 so 20% off at $587 from Jenni.  Just to inform the decision a little.

Is this painted and ready to install?
If that's the case, I think you have to go with the new one.

That's color matched from the factory.  Of course, you'll need to return the old one.  It's VIN protected.

Yes, that's painted to match.  Saw Jim's notice in the preceding post and not sure that's correct on SEEG fairings.  I bought a replacement a couple of years ago and wasn't asked for the old one.  Can remember a few others doing the same.

Let me know if you need the part number for the banana fairing.  This evening I'll be close to the parts manual and can look it up.

That's a pretty good deal, by the time you get a good used faring get the paint and pay for a good painter, I don't think you would save anything. But you'll still have to deal with the other damage.

It is VIN protected to order, but you do not need to return the old parts

Thanks Don.  He is going to the bank tomorrow to see if he can get the money.  This bike would make a great winter project for us.
I hope he can make a deal on it.  He has been without a bike for over two years due to divorce.  It would be good to get my riding buddy back on two wheels, and a SEEG would be a first class way to do it!

You mentioned left side damage.  Here's part numbers for painted pieces that might have dinged in a left side fall over.

59583-05bsf---rear fender
58972-05bse---frt fender
58851-05bsf---left lower
58546-05bsf---inner fairing
58260-05bse---outer fairing
66620-05bse---left side cover

I concur with the above, unless you are going for a complete re-paint like Chief did, order new and the stuff will match.  :2vrolijk_21:

There's no doubt about that - but this guy is just looking to do a piece or two.

You see Chief's powder coated frame and it still makes me wonder why they left that off the touring bikes  :nixweiss:

Well, my son decided against buying this bike.  I'm kinda disappointed, but a good judgement call by him.  He is back in school and decided that the $$$ for a bike might put a strain on his budget right now.

Anyway if anyone is interested, here is a link to the info about the bike.  The pics shown do not show the damage on the left side (mainly to the outer fairing).
