How is FLHTCUSE3 recall bikes performing after upgraded heads
« on: October 14, 2008, 06:12:51 PM »

I am fixing to take my FLHTCUSE3 for the recall which involves changing the heads and head gaskets. The Harley shop said that the only differents is the valve guides as far as the head are concerned. I was kind of courious if the motor acts different after recall fix.

Eddie:  :huepfenjump3: I have had all of the recalls done on my 08 CUSE3 and it runs great.  The bike ran great before the recall was done and it still runs great.  I did have the Stage 1 upgrade done before the recall, so I do notice much more getup and go than before the Stage1 kit was installed.  The MoCo says that the long term reliability has been increased, but that has yet to be determined.  Providing your dealership has some good techs that know what they are doing, I would not give the recall a second thought.  Good luck and keep the rubber side down and the wind in your face.   :drink:

If the repair includes no alteration to or replacement of the existing map in your ECM the parts had better be functional duplications.  And the bike better run close enough to the same you'd never notice it in the seat of your pants.

TwoLanerider:  There is no new map for the ECM when installing this recall.  It was a one for one exchange of the heads, valve guides and head gasket.  I didn't even have to remap the ECM for the Stage 1 kit.  I used the SE hi-flo air cleaner and the SE Touring Street pro slip-ons.  There is no map for the Stage 1 if SE parts are used.  At least that is what the tech told me and he has many years experience and does an excellent job.

That was the supposition GG.  And that being so performance shouldn't be better or worse.  All the parts are functional equivalents.  No map changes required or done.  Same before and after.

I to have had all the enhancements done on my 08(New Heads,Gaskets)and the bike runs good except I have a clang noise in the motor between 2600 and 3000 rpm in 1,2 and third gear. Runs Great but it drives me nut's to hear that clanging sound. Someone has stated that its the pistons making that noise and that Harley says its normal and the long gevity of the motor is not effected???????????????

Doesn't Harley have a trademark on the word "Normal"?  I hear it so often at the HD shops that I've learned that it must be a specialty Harley "tool"! So far I've notice that everything about a Harley is "Normal".  :huepfenlol2:  Sorry, didn't mean to  :jack: the thread. Enough said.

I had the recall done a couple of months ago. I haven't really been home enough since to put any real miles on, but it does seem to pull a little better. 6th gear is a little more useful- I don't have to be running 75-80 to be able to stay in 6th. I know that they did nothing with the map or anything else, it just seems to pull better. :nixweiss:

Made my appointment for the head fix September 3 knowing I'd be on vacation and business travel for 2 weeks in early October.  Dealer said "no problem.
Left the bike in shop On October 3 for the 2 weeks.
Showed up to get bike on October 17 and was told "Sorry we didn't call you.  But there are so many recalls getting fixed right now, Harley has backordered the parts and won't give us a delivery date.  We don't know when we can fix your bike"

Now that's service !

If the repair includes no alteration to or replacement of the existing map in your ECM the parts had better be functional duplications.  And the bike better run close enough to the same you'd never notice it in the seat of your pants.

My dealer advised me today (10/25/2008) that the MOCO is receiving numerous complaints about the issue with the campaign work on the 110's. Apparently, the heads HAVE been completely reworked and the porting is different (supposedly confirmed by the MOCO). Because of this the bikes WILL NEED to be re-tuned to compensate for these new heads or owners will most likely experience problems and HD WILL NOT pay for any custom tuning nor are they offering any kind of ECM update/download for stock bikes that get this campaign done. I am flat out refusing to spend another $400.00 on a custom tune unless the MOCO decides to pay for it (like that will happen). I am so fed up with the MOCO and it's B.S I am really thinking about my next bike purchase being something other than an HD.

However, I told the techs at my dealer that my bike seems to be running fine and I was unable to notice any major difference in power or acceleration and did not notice any flat spots, hesitation, backfiring, etc. So who knows !!!

One week later (Oct 24) and my dealer still has no idea when the parts will be in.  They tell me no one at HD will even give them an estimated date.  You'd think the MOCO could tell the dealer something like "MAYBE NEXT JULY" . Right?

But I love my book, my pretty, pretty, pretty book.  No one better touch my book, my book, my book.  I keep right next to my favorite red stapler!!  CHIT!
