Road Glide
« on: October 15, 2008, 09:54:41 AM »

I currently have a 2007 FXSTSSE, but the more I look at the Road Glides, the more I like them. I was thinking that when I get the money saved up, my next bike would probably be one, unless a lot of people are unhappy with them. Can I get a little input as to why I should/should not but a SERG?
Thanks.

Only reason not to buy one is if you have really short little stubby arms and can't reach the radio to change CDs.  :D

If your into touring it may not be the best in the line up. Next year Willie will probably offer a dressed version with a touring suspension and maybe a wet motor. If your into the hot rod look I don't think you could pick a cooler bike than the 09.  Doc

The only problem with the 09 SERG is less for more. They should have kept the original items from the 2001 model year. They dumped the tour-pak along with a few other nice items. But of course you will definitely pay for a 110 cu.in. motor, 6 speed transmission, ABS with Brembo brakes (My 99 BMW K1200LTC has Brembo ABS brakes and all the options for $19K) and the new look rear end sheet metal. Did the Mo Co ever get the 110 engine gremlin problems corrected?

The Mo Co marketing strategy is: If their are people willing to spent $60K for a bagger ours is a deal. The down side to this is those $60K bikes are now on E-bay for half the money. Its a terrible investment. Now try to find one at MSRP. You will probably pay a few grand over.

The United States auto and motorcycle manufacturers continue to make the same mistakes. The Japanese pushed the envelope on technology in this area and gave us what we really wanted for far less money. Ford, GM and finally the Germans saw the light after declining sales.

Wow! Mo Co finally puts decent brakes on their bikes and actually has a motor with torque. My Harley's over the years are the only bike I had to dump money into to make them brake, accelerate and handle. Now what touring bike besides a Harley cost $30K.  I almost sold my 2001 SERG and purchased a 09 But people are crazy to spent $30K for this bike.

Keep your Springer and check out other touring motorcycle manufacturers.

Some people will strongly disagree with my position. Flame suit is on!

No flames here. There are lots of touring bikes cheaper w/ more features. Assuming you're talking about a CVO your easily looking at $32,000 + . If you're talking about a non CVO drop about $10,000 off of that. As an aside, it's true across the line for the most part. Jap motorcycles are cheaper. I didn't buy my Harleys because they are the cheapest on the market nor because they're necessarily the best. I got them all just because I like them, they serve me very well, I feel really good going down the road on them and the just make me happy. Been lots of places, seen lots of things, met lots of people, just had a frickin ball and wouldn't consider changing brands.

Pretty well sums it up Jim! I'm very critical of the MoCo! But I wouldn't own another brand (except custom HD's) either! :2vrolijk_21:

Hi AZSSE.

To get a good answer to your question you'd have to say what type of riding you do.  If it's mostly long distance touring, you can't beat the SEEG because of the extras:  intercom hook up, XM, lower fairing, softer suspension, king tour pak, etc.  I've had two Road Glides now and for me, it's a better bike.  I tour (1K miles last week) but like a quicker bike around town.  We also have a lot of twistys out here in So. Cal.  The fixed fairing handles better, esp. in the wind.  I had a chopped tour pak for my 04 RG which was more than enough space for me.  Some "need" more space.  Check out a thread by "harleyjohn."  He hated his SERG but was the only one I know of.  I think it is a very comfortable bike and had two three hundred mile days last week.

Frank raised some good issues.  You do get a lot more style and less practicality than the SEEG but the SEEG is more expensive.  You can add the extras you want and save a bit.  The German or Japanese bikes may have some better tech., but HD has come a long way.   I had zero issues with my 04 RG even though it had a 103" crate motor which was pretty radical (at the time).  The new bike feels very solid with the new frame.  I added a digital oil temp gauge out of heat concerns.  It's running right at 212* but I've been in mostly cool weather.  I'm going for the fullsac cores, removing the cc and installing the SERT.  That should alleviate any temp issues.

Before I bought my first RG, I road the BMW's.  I liked the K1200GT but could not see spending hours at a time on the bike.  Did not consider the Honda's.  The Goldwing is a great tourer but too big to be practical for me. Don't even get me started with the trade / political issues with Japan but I see no reason to send their country a dime.  I ride with a friend who has the 2004 BMW K1200RS.  Last month, his clutch went out and he needs a single cable / part.  Takes three weeks to get it from Germany and the repair cost is nuts.  If you read the SERG threads you'll see people love them.  Same for the SEEG.  Years ago, when shopping for bikes a friend of mine asked the dealer why not a foreign bike with all the tech.  The dealer, near 70 said, "They're great bikes... just no soul."  I agree.

Get it, you won't regret it.  The paint, the engine, the frame, suspension, is 10 times better than an 07.  It's a great looking bike that will perform like a champ.

I would not deny garage space at my home for one. I like them. Even the red ones, which is unusual because the 3xred serg, brandy serk and the switchblade are the only red bikes I like alot.  Other red bikes I just like.

I am getting partial to silver and blue.

If you want the "show" paint, chrome, and the bigger engine it's going to cost about the same bucks.

The last bike of mine had a descent engine, but by the time I sent the tins out for paint and bought all the chrome, I was into the same kind of money I have in the SERG now. I figure I have in excess of 120 hours of my own time in the last ride, and I didn't expect to recoup that expense. However; your time is worth something.

Bonus with the 09 SERG "new frame" and it is all it's cracked up to be. Plus you get a real cruise control and don't forget the Anti-lock brakes.

If you want more down the road, the parts are at least available and the chrome is nice.

Bottom line, it's all expensive. But, it's the only hobby I've got.

...only if you had to buy a 09. I'm in Carlbad today and tried to look up eGlideGoodies and he said there is no retail facility here and the vents for the lowers are unavailable now but a new shipment is expected soon. Doc

Very happy with Road Glides.   My experience of 47,000 miles on my '00 CVO Glide (90% of that 2up touring/300-500 mi per day) is GET ONE!!! You will love it.   I previously had a Gold Wing 1500 and also put about 50k on that with the wife.  We both prefer the CVO Glide.  She found it more comfy as did I.  I liked the rider position better on Glide, but it did take a Corbin seat that I had them build with added padding to get me 2" closer to front ( 31"" inseam) and that was needed.   The Corbin padding for passenger was a big plus too said wifey.  I put a full size detachable ultra tour pack on the Glide and tourpak rack too.  I have rented alot of Ultras and Electra Glides and do not think they corner as well, handle the wind as well, nor the long highway days with sidewinds and passing truck winds to deal with.  I say need a frame mount fairing on a touring bike for sure.......IMHO of course.    And the luxury CVO with ease of detaching the big tourpak for a weekend scoot on the best looking bagger is such a bonus.    Now if my new '09 Glide would get in so I and find out if we like it even more than the trusty ol '00 Eagle I would be so happy.      Till then I gotta ride my orange KTM EXC450 on the trails and only dream about highway rides.
