Looking To Upgrade! What's Your Advice?

For HEADPAN62:

I have a '01 SERG with over 70,000 miles on it and want to make some changes/upgrades! I'm thinking of going a few different directions. What do ya'll think might be best?

I am twisted on what to do with my cam chains.
Gear drive? More noise?
Upgrade to hydraulic tensioners with new camplate/oil pupmp? Dealer told me I would still need tensioners at 35,000 miles or so.
Or just replace stock tensioner shoes and keep on trucking!
Or try to get a Evo in there,no chit really might do that.
I figure what this site suggests, I would think serious about doing.
Your input would be apreciated! I should had gotten that 1998 when I had the chance!
I dont want to go fast, just want reliability with the least amount of valve train noise!!

I've discussed some optins with Marc about this. Let's see wat ya'll think as well! Thanks! :2vrolijk_21:

They may make a little noise, but I still feel that gear drives is still the way to go.

I agree Ernie. But at 70,00 miles, I told him it's imreative that he check the crank runout first before going that route.

HD has a complete engine rebuild program too. For about 2 grand, he can get a renewed 95" engine from HD. Another option.

So if you did the new motor, would you leave it as is?? If not you'd need to add the cost of any changes you'd make. For $2,500 to just over $3,000, you could have a nice cam/top end rebuild. I guess it would depend on how much you trust the bottom end, and if you can leave the new motor alone.  :nixweiss:

I'd not be worried about a bottom end yet at 70k.  If Marc's feelings are the same it would seem then that his comparison becomes the cost of a cam job versus the cost of the HD rebuild + another cam job (or at least tension job) in anywhere between 15k and 50k miles.  After all, the new motor will still have the same old tensioner system in it.

Just bust'n you chops, but really the same is true, if he's going to leave it alone, then probably the new motor, just my opinion.

I would change cam shoes and leave it be,unless it has other problems, see how many miles he can get out of it with the least amount of work done to it

Exactly my point.
what I spend in a gear drive, I can get my motor rebuilt by H-D
I mostly tour with this bike, so I kinda wanted to stick with H-D chit incase of breakdowns...etc
Dealerships will have my parts..

You've had 70,000 good miles with the current Harley setup. I would send in for a HD rebuild and ride another 70,000 miles and be happy.

spend the money on doo-dads  :bananarock: don't do nothing to the motor, put another 70K miles on it, then come back and tell us how well the MoCo 'used' to build them Harley's   :2vrolijk_21:
