Cold natured evo's
« on: October 19, 2008, 08:36:06 AM »

Does everyone out there have ther problem of starting these fxr's as I do. I try not using the enricher as much as possible. usually i give my bike about 3-5 squirts of gas and hit starter and off she goes, feather the idel for few minutes and i'm on my way. the bike i have for sale now ( tangerrine) won't start period w/out using the enricher plus few squirts of gas..and then spits and sputters for few minutes and finally idels smooth. Are all of these evo's cold natured or are we using improper procedure in starting them? Fellow who dynoed the tangerine couple of years ago..said don't use enricher..it fouls plugs..just pump some gas in her and feather throttle till smooth idel.  Any other opinions???  dave

Never cared for the CV stock carb/dual-fire ignition setup. I love using an S&S Super E with a Dyna Single-fire Ignition with Evo's. Never have starting problems. When ya do, it's cause something's broken, not for any other reason. ;)

I guess I've always taken it for granted that some of this was just the nature of the beast.  It seldoom gets cool enough down here to really require using the enrichener, but I occasionally do.  Most often, I just twist the throttle a few times and hit the starter.  Even then, it's likely to spit and sputter a bit before it smooths out.  And of course, I do the proper Evo warmup before heading out.  In my experiece, it depends on how often the moter has been run up to temperature.  If it's been within a week, it starts much more willingly.  The longer it sits between starts, the more hesitant it is.

Ain't that the truth, Mike?  They don't like to be woken up from a long sleep, do they?

On mine, it takes two or three twists of the throttle and the enrichener all the way out to get 'er fired. After that, I screw down the throttle lock and let 'er idle at 1,500 or so for a few minutes without the enrichener.  By the tme I leave the subdivision, she's usually good to go.

I've found that with the stock setup you; pull the enrichener all the way out, 3 twists of throttle, no throttle to start at all and push the button. The almost immediately after started, push the enrichener back in while using the throttle to keep the idle up to around 1500. Lock it with the throttle lock for a few minutes to let it warm up. You're good to go! Let these babies warm up before pushing em if ya like your base gaskets dry! ;)

I use same start-up procedures described by Hoist above.  I've got a Mikuni in mine.  As it's my other bike, I'm amazed that it starts every time (as long as I charge the battery every so often).  The only thing I do differently is turn up the idle using the throttle screw.  Once it cranks, I turn down the enrichener half way, then about 20 seconds later turn it off, and then while I'm putting on my helmet, etc. I slowly turn down the idle screw to normal idle, which for my bike is between 1000 and 1100 rpms.  By that time the bike is good and warm.  That process has worked for me for almost 9 years now.  Speaking of which, I need to head over to that anniversay thread to see how far west my vote has taken it.

Hi Dave, This is the setup I am running on my bike and it works much better for cold starts than the original equipment. The Single-fire setup seems to make the bike run better all the way around. Highly recommended.

Hey guys.....

Once again I agree with everything Mike (REDFXR2) stated.....here in Colorado, basically I pull out the enricher in the late fall to early spring time frame and leave it pulled out until after the bike has started for about 30 seconds during the summer there isn't a need to pull out the enricher maybe twist the throttle two times and start the best machine HD ever made....it will sputter and spit a bit....but then it gets going....once it starts I lock the dead man cruise control lol and keep it at 1100 RPMS until the rear rocker box cover begins getting warm, then I run it very gently for 10 miles before I ride it like I stole it, "very gently" means not letting the RPMS get over 3,000 within any gear while the bike is moving before shifting.  LOL MOST HD Owners never see 3,000 RPMS before shifting.....from what I read everyone shifts their bikes too soon....lol like in the 2200 range....so what I feel is "gentle" is another's "beating" of my machine.....

Dave (hdfxr3)~~~~
Really I have no problem starting mine.....but with that one that you are "selling" I would be happy to take that "problem" off of your hands....and knowing that you wouldn't ever want to "SELL" a "Defective Bike" I will just keep it until I get that "problem" worked out.....

Being frustrated with EFI and the expense of a race tuner and dyno tuning, defective sensors, etc. , I welcome the day when my FXR4 is delivered so I can learn how to start a carb bike again!

I had a 1996 Dyna that had the stock carb, a little hotter than stock cam and drag pipes.  I used the exact same procedure as Hoist mentions above to start it.  It didn't matter if it was 80 out, if it had sit more than 12 hours this procedure was necessary.  And it had to warm up for at least 5 minutes or it would fall flat on it's face.

With the Super E it's much less finicky! Lift the enrichener, 3 cracks of the throttle, push the start button. And with the Dyna single-fire ignition, she fires right up instantly! Let the enrichener down halfway almost immediately (easy to foul plugs if ya don't know this carb :nixweiss:) for a minute or 2 til she warms up some (remember them base gaskets! ;)), then push it all the way down and take off! Never misses or stumbles at all! And a HD V-Twin with an S&S Teardrop A/C just has that look! they way it belongs!!! :2vrolijk_21:
