I was just notified that my local dealer was killed in a helicopter crash on Thursday. The wreckage was not found until yesterday.

A pilot dies after crashing a helicopter in Tompkins County.

State Police say the helicopter was reported missing Saturday.

It departed Norwich Thursday and was flying to Ohio.

The wreckage, and the pilot was located by New York State Police Aviation in a heavily wooded area near Sodom Road, in the Town of Dryden.

Pilot, 57 year-old Earl Small of Georgia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

New York State Police, the National Traffic Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration are continuing their investigation.

Earl will be greatly missed.

Copter wreckage of craft missing since Thursday found in Dryden
by Associated Press
Sunday October 19, 2008, 9:50 PM

Searchers have found the wreckage of a helicopter and dead pilot missing since Thursday in the Southern Tier.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters said the helicopter was found about 10 a.m. Sunday.

State police said the pilot, Earl L. Small Jr., 57, of Powder Springs, Ga., had left the airport in Norwich, Chenango County, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday heading to Zanesville, Ohio.

Col. Herbert Lavin of the Civil Air Patrol, which helped search, said the Robinson R-22 helicopter was embedded in pine trees on a ridge in the Tompkins County town of Dryden.

Small's body was found in the wreckage.

Small's wife had reported the aircraft missing to the New York State Emergency Management Office.

Troopers said they didn't know how much experience Small had as a pilot, but he owned several aircraft.

Federal investigators are trying to determine why the helicopter crashed.

Dryden is 40 miles south of Syracuse.

Nobody deserves to die young but sometimes it seems only the good do as the saying goes.
Always tragic to hear of a fellow rider gone.
It would seem he had a love of things mechanical however and died enjoying one of them
My condolences to the family and friends.

Our HOG chapter is trying to figure out the logistics of coordinating all the motorcycles expected to show up on Sunday.  It's a small sacrafice.
