cylinder removal
« on: October 20, 2008, 07:05:23 PM »

Does anyone here know if you can remove the cylinders and leave the pistons in them by removing the wrist pins on a 110? I was told by the dealer they could do this. Now they are saying they can't. Which is it? Thanks in advance

It's not easy, but it's possible.

Might want to take advantage of having your motor apart and install rings and have your cylinders honed.  Add some life to your motor....  Unless your mileage is really really low...   :nixweiss:

The reason I ask is my rear cylinder is leaking again at the base since they did the 0905 program. They replaced the cylinders, pistons and rings when they did the work about 2000 miles ago. I am leary if they remove they cylinders from the rings they won't seat right again, even though the dealer says it won't be a problem. The first time my motor leaked at the heads and bases at 5000 miles.  They replaced the gaskets and o rings and just removed the cylinders from the pistons and re installed them without new rings. They said that I did not need new rings. After that my motor had oil carryover into the air cleaner. Currently I have no oil carryover so the rings are seated.

Given your prior experience, I think you answered your own question... It is possible to pull the cylinders and leave the pistons in place.  I have done it.  It is definitely hard, but possible   It is a bear to get the retainer clip out, but once out, the rest is easy.

But, if they won't or can't do it - given your prior experience - have your cylinders cross hatched and replace the rings...  You can try to get them to pay for it, but they probably won't...

Good luck with it...

I do it all of the time. Axil showed me this trick a couple of years ago. Just make sure you place a rag around the top off the opening in the cases. You will never fish it out if you drop it.

You guys that have done this. Are there anything tricks to doing this I should tell the dealer besides to make sure they cover up the cases so the retainer does not fall into the cases? The service manager told me yesterday this could not be done so, I want to make it as easy as possible on them. I appreciate the input guys!!

I'd be careful asking them to do something THEY say can't be done. You tell em, they screw up, then blame you for making em do it! :nixweiss:

I'd pull the jugs and get em recross hatched, and put new rings in. Better to be safe than sorry! ;)

I've seen the reverse, putting the jugs on with the pistons in them, I think Scott did this on his build. You'd have to remove the jugs slowly, until you can get at the C clips, and then pull the wrist pin.
