Cruise Control quit, any tips on testing
« on: October 22, 2008, 01:13:36 PM »

I am getting the red light indicating power to the switch on the left grip is on but cruise will not engage. It was working and has quit. Items done just prior to failure are: Took the headlight apart and improved some wiring going to the left aux switch which controls my GPS. Replaced tail light with LED lights and control module. I have checked the fuse and looked inside the headlight assembly to confirm no plugs undone. Confirmed that brake light is not on continuously. I don't know enough about how the system works to properly test other items. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

After repeated tries, I got the cruise to engage. It did not want to stay locked in and did not respond to increasing by bumping the resume switch.  That caused immediate disengagment. Acts as if it is not making good contact with the switch. I will attempt to clean the switch tomorrow.

The electrical diag manual has a very detailed step by step instruction for troubleshooting the Cruise control system.

i have seen some problems with the led bleeding just enough power through the bulb to kick off the cruise control.
you mite try putting the old stuff back in and see if there is a difference.   axil

Had a 2000 Road King that I added cruise control to.  The SEEG behaves differently.  But on that 2000 model if the brake light went out the cruise control didn't work.  So if the LEDs and their module aren't loading correctly it's at least an easy thing to try.

Just returned from the 3 sisters rally in south Texas. I used the cruise several times on the trip. Each use seems to improve the operation. I may have created this problem by keeping the bike too clean. I don't use a pressure hose but do use a garden hose water to wet and rinse the bike. I may have gotten something wet enough to cause poor contact. Anyway, the cruise is now working on its on. I have not repaired anything. It just happened. By the way, the 3 Sisters ride was very nice. Lots of twisters and beautiful country. Thanks for all of the tips.
