Am I Crazy or is my Dealer Ripping People Off??
« on: October 22, 2008, 08:19:31 PM »

I usually do my own maintenance, but I was in a hurry to get my 2007 FLHTCUSE ready for sale since my new 2009 was to be delivered in the next couple of weeks, so...

I dropped off my bike to get the 15K service done.

They charged me for 7 quarts of oil.

The last time I checked and did this myself, it basically goes roughly like this:

1 Quart Primary
1 Quart Trans
4 Quarts Engine with allowance for filter.

I count six.

They tried to tell me that the Primary usually takes a few extra ounces so they can only charge for full quarts so my charge was for seven.

He also told me that "all big twins" take seven quarts.

I call bullsh!t.

Your thoughts?

On an engine oil change, I typically only use 3 1/2 quarts - which in your case would leave a half quart "for those few extra ounces" they claim.  Worst case, if you are using the same oil in all holes, you would only have to open 6 quarts - and that is stretching it.

That's the way I've always done it.  I never put over six quarts total in any bike.

He told me the primary takes a few extra ounces than a quart (nope) so that's why the overcharge.

I said the engine only takes a little over three, so what about the extra there?

He just shrugged his shoulders.

Ace, I hate to be the one to bring this up, but being crazy isn't necessarily related to your dealer ripping people off.  In other words, the fact that your dealer is in fact ripping you off doesn't automatically give you a clean bill of mental health. ;)

I would hazard a guess that one or more folks in that shop is getting free oil for his own bike by charging an extra quart to customer work orders.  Wouldn't be the first time I've seen or heard of techs doing that sort of thing.  The "couple extra ounces in the primary" thing is pure BS, but even if it were true then they should give you the remaining 30 ounces left in the jug.  You pay for it, it belongs to you.

Looking @ my Service Manual for my 2007 SFHTCU it says

Wet Fill    38oz
Dry Fill     45oz

When I had the dealer change everything at 10K when I was rushed for time to do it myself, they only charged me for 6.

So a quart has 32oz in it and they hit you for a full qt and then they hit the next 3 guys for the price of the same qt.  Yeah they should have at least kissed you.

Yup.

This is one of those dealers where you have great parts guys, good sales guys and a terrible service department.

On the rare occasion I have them do work for me, I plan on something going wrong.  It's almost funny.

One time they had three different parts lines on a workorder a couple of years back that were for wheel weights.  A total of 26, I believe.  Granted they don't cost much.

The thing is, no wheel or tire work was done.  :nixweiss:

26 of 'em.

What I really like is the extra 5% for 'shop supplies.'  At $84/hr that 5% adds another $4.20 for each hour of labor.  That buys a chitload of shop supplies.

My dealer charges $7.50 for shop supplies. So depending upon what your having done this might be an OK thing or it might be pretty steep, but at least it's consistent.

Nah, just put some oil smudges on it and pretend it was replaced would probably be more like it.

I've got it, they just put your used oil back in and charged you for seven quarts to make up the labor difference for pouring it back in. It all makes sence now and here we all thought you were getting ripped-silly us.!!!   Hee Hee

For FLH models I typically charge customers for a gallon and a quart of oil ( 3.5 or so for the engine, and a quart + for the primary) Then another quart of gear oil for the tranny. On 99-06 bikes the trannies do not use a full quart (about 22-24 oz) but on 07+ bikes they use a quart and sometime a bit more so it balances out.

I do not know how to justify 7 quarts :nixweiss:

As far as shop supplies go as a shop owner I can understand, but do not agree with, some shops are charging for them. I go through several cans of brake cleaner a week to clean oil that spills when changing filters etc. There are also other cleaners and detail stuff. It all adds up and a shop doing many services can have alot of money spent on these things every month. It is a legitimate expense but passing it on to the customer isn't right in my opinion. To me its a cost of doing business........

The engine, with new filter, takes 3,5. Not 4. Trust me, I had it done three times over to get my old oil completely cleaned out after the recall, oops, campaign work. And, by the way, the dealer charged only one time 3,5, which I thought was very customer friendly.
