Stainless engine builder fastener set
« on: October 24, 2008, 05:41:29 PM »

Polished Stainless set from Gardner-Wescot. I prefer this over chrome because they will not corrode and have a slightly undersized polished head with stainless washers. All of the larger bolts have extra thick hardened washers. This kit has every engine bolt including the rocker covers. Great buy under $300. Most HD dealers can supply this kit. Part# SP-GW-72-A

Seems like as good a place as any to ask this question.

Does Gardner/Wescott make a complete bike builders kit ?

A-Z every nut, bolt, screw and washer for a particular model ?

I used 12 pt. polished stainless fasteners on my engine.  I have always experienced problems with hex head fastners rounding out with repeated use.

Brian, GW and Colony are big names for those kinds of things.  Here's another that I've got good product from before and at least used to be a fair bit cheaper.  They also offer just about everything.

Every single fastener on MJZ's 03 SERK is a 12 point. I think he had to buy some new tools when he got it  ;)

Has there been any reports of "galding" when using SS fasteners in high heat applications?

Sorry to be a dick, but I'm pretty sure the word is "galling" . I think if a subject is going to be discussed, it's important to use the correct terminology. Galling is very common when using a stainless steel fastener in dissimilar metal such as mild steel or aluminum. More so in aluminum. I believe any tech pub you read on fasteners would recommend using some type of never seize compound when installing the fastener. Of course in your post above, the never seize would dry up, burn off what have you, so you run the risk of galling. I believe this is why the factory exhaust header bolts are a common steel curb nut. I believe the studs are also common steel.

Hey IG, I know it's got to be a bit of a worry.  But in practice it's not a problem I've ever experienced after having put them on a bike myself.

Obviously some places like exhaust wouldn't use them.  Galling there would worry me much more.  And wouldn't install them any way other than by hand (no air tools for this).  But so long as they're not over torqued and installed carefully to begin with I've had good luck with them for a long long time.

Another thought that just came to mind.  On water cooled bikes wouldn't use them on any bolt hole that intrudes in to the water jacket.

Why ?  I went to lengths to say I wasn't trying to be a dick. But if somebody is unfamiliar with the term, why propagate the incorrect ? Should I repeat a mistake because somebody might take offense at being corrected ? That's just plain dumb. I offer as the ultimate example of this type of thing, Dr Condeleza Rice using the phrase Nucular when as an educated woman she is fully aware there is no such word. But hey, her boss is POTUS and that's the word he uses.
