smoke update
« on: October 25, 2008, 12:52:09 PM »

110 SEUC producing clouds of blue smoke from cold on start up for about 15 seconds . The bike had `the fix` 500 miles ago but had no obvious faults before the fix. On stripdown at dealers revealed rear cylinder heavy deposits and
oil around the piston/ air intake. Oil stem seals look ok as does the head so where is oil getting in ?
Your input valued thanks. Dealer will phone technical dept for advice

I think the little note at the bottom of your post says it all:  "If it aint broke keep fixin it till it is"

Valve stem seals can "look OK" and still pass fairly large quantities of oil, and that would be my first guess.  Did the new heads come completely built up with new valves, springs, seals, etc., or did the dealer remove and transfer parts from the old heads to the new ones?

The reason I lean toward the valve stem seal is the fact that the smoke clears quickly (15 seconds) after startup, and the location of the heavy deposits at the intake valve.  A bad/nicked seal could continue to seep after the engine was shut down, with the oil collecting on the valve and dripping into the cylinder, and would result in a big puff of smoke at startup.  The dealer should be able to figure this out very easily; if there is oil in the intake port, the number one suspect is the intake valve seal.

Even so...

Jerry's advice is sound....  Blue smoke at startup for 15 sec. is almost always a valve seal...

The guys are most likely correct.
First, just looking at the seals tells you nothing, perfectly good looking seals leak all the time.
And if its real bad at start up, almost gotta be a seal.
Harley Tech should have know this, most people that have been around engines for any time will tell you the same.
Maybe he just does not want to look bad  , HUH!!!!!!!!
Either way, hope this helps.

Replacing all of those parts tells me one thing. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS REALLY WRONG!!!!! My guess is like everyone else. Valve seal. But if they want to replace all the other parts let them.

Sounds like the shotgun approach... But all of the components are there - so one of them should do it.   :2vrolijk_21:

Still would place a bet on the valve seals.

Agree
As a GM Dealer tech. (PART TIME NOW).
I see guys do this all the time.
We call it (THROWIN PARTS AT IT TILL YA FIX IT).
Guys will do this when unsure whats broke, or are to stupid to find whats wrong.
A good DIAG, tech is hard too find in any field today, DAMN shame.
Good luck

Latest from HD dealer putting my bike back together today (wed) they think that one of the piston rings was put on the wrong way up, apparently they used to mark directional rings with a dot but not now its something other. Anyway rings are on back order so i am having new piston with rings complete, new jug , bottom `o` ring ,head complete, & of course another new type gasket. If it aint fixed now it s never gonna be......ya thinks so cousin`s

That dealer must be mentally impaired as the late 110" motors come with Mahle pistons and rings, which ARE CLEARLY marked,in all but braile,as to what side is up.
If other than Mahle pistons were used,it's very simple to tell if the rings were installed properly.
Oil Ring = no up or down
2nd Ring = dot up (if dot was left off) you should have a very thin (.020") shiney line at the bottom of the ring, which means it was installed properly.
Top Ring = if no marking can go on either way.If there is a bevel, the bevel goes to the top.
Now you can see if your getting a BS story.
