Ride to Chattanooga, TN
« on: October 26, 2008, 01:16:27 AM »

Last weekend, I had a rare Saturday off to put together with my normal Sunday, so Suzanne and I decided to take the Lookout Mountain Parkway up to Chattanooga, TN for a nice dinner at The Big River Grille and Brewery, and a stay in The Read House.  If you've not been to Chattanooga for anything put a pass through on the way to someplace else, you're missing a fun time.  The old downtown area has been revitalized by the aquarium, so some nice places to eat and lay down for the night.  The Read House is an Historic landmark in the city, and always a nice place to stay.

The temps were in the mid to upper 60's on the ride up, but not a cloud in the autumn sky.  It's little early for the leaves in North Alabama, so not much fall color.  Lookout Mountain Parkway begins in Gadsden, AL and ends when you wind your way down off the top of the mountain and into Chattanooga.  It's only about a 100 mile run, but goes through some nice places...we rode through a nice State Park in Alabama - Desoto State Park - then into the little town of Mentone, where we stopped for lunch at Log Cabin Deli.  The Parkway then takes you due East into extreme Eastern Western GA, then due North, passing by Cloudland Canyon Park before crossing into TN.  We arrived about 4PM, checked into the room, got cleaned up and went to dinner at Big River, where I had a great steak, mashed 'taters, and a couple of the homemade brews.

After sharing a plate of pancakes with fresh fruit the next morning, we loaded the Liner up and headed home the same way...only about 20 miles out of nearly 400 on the interstate.  On the way back, we detoured and took in the rim road around Little River Canyon National Preserve, supposedly the deepest canyon East of the Mississippi.  When the water is up, the canyon is a Class VI whitewater run, mostly done in Kayaks, and with support teams.

Great time...had a chance to unwind a bit, and test the bike out on a short road trip.  Very pleased with the bike, so far.

Just a couple of pictures....first one is Nocalula Falls, at he beginning of the Parkway, near Gadsden.  Water is down on top of the mountain.

They were having a fall street festival in Mentone, so more people than usual were out and about.  Only about 750 people live there.  Lots of great B&B's though, and some good riding in the area.  Quiet little town.

one more of another lookout, and side arm of the Canyon, where Wolf Creek comes in....Legend holds that one of the Last Creek indians holed up in this canyon, and his ghost can still be seen standing on some of the rims...

Other side...bike is getting a Corbin Classic Solo and Pillion this week, with driver's backrest...picked it up used off another site.  Have replaced the windshield already, and added luggage rack, brake pedal cover, and will do the shifter arm when it gets here.

Thanks, Henry...not much time to ride, but sqeeze one in on occasion.  Bike is fun to ride, and cruises well from 60-75, with lots of TQ down low...there's more in there, but that'll happen later.  With twin 43mm TB's, they make a velocity stack kit for each with K&N's.  There's an air box under the tank at present.  More research is needed before taking that step.  Stock exhaust is fine though...kind of enjoying the relative quiet, but it doesn't sound like a Singer or anything...nice deep growl on acceleration.

Suzzane is quite comfortable too, which is very important.  She'll be even better with the Corbin being slightly wider and cupped a bit.  My part of the seat will be a "close" version...this is a LONG bike.  Would easily fit a 6'5" man...everything is a few inches more forward, and the boards are very long.  Probably designed around a 6' person.  I just scoot up a bit on the seat for now.

Certainly down with the "time" factor.  Got a bud where I used to work who has one of those.  Friggin' thing is HUGE.  Fast too.  1800cc I think?  Anywho, he's quite pleased the machine, and the really cool thing is, you guys are riding.  The uncool thing is, I'm not.
We've discussed many times the importance of keeping the BSR comfortable.  The dividends are huge, despite this economy.  I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are gonna turn the Liner into a world class touring machine on which you and the Diva will blissfully cross this great land of ours time and time again.  Really looking forward to seeing your work on that machine, Terry.
