US rt 36
« on: October 26, 2008, 03:59:40 PM »

Just finished a 8,500 mile trip around the country.Came back to New York through Denver and was looking for a way to avoid the interstates.Got lucky & picked US rt 36 that starts just east of Denver.Took it all the way across Kansas & Missouri to Illinois where it's mostly buried under the interstate 72 &74.NICE ROAD.Not real exciting, but not much of the midwest is.Good surface with hardly any traffic.Kansas was mostly 2 lane & Missouri mostly 4 lane.By passed most of the small towns & mostly 65 mph speed limit.Set the cruise at 70 which was as fast as we ran on the interstates due to the fact that one of the bikes with me was a '84 FLH with 90,000 miles on it.70 was about as it's owner wanted to push it,but that's another story. Sure beat fighting the trucks on I 70.

Sounds like a good route for me to try on my round trip to TX back to NJ.  Thanks for the info.

I did that route in reverse a few years back and you are right, pretty unremarkable. If you hate truck traffic on I-70, it is a good alternative. I've found that the truck traffic from Kansas City to Denver is a lot less than Kansas City East.

Sounds like a nice trip.  I know driving across hwy 6 in Indiana and going east is a nice low traffic drive.  It's a two lane and can get frustrating behind a truck or whatever but overal better than the interstates.

Sounds like you had a great trip.  Rode out to North Carolina last year and returned on 36 through Kansas.  For sure, a two lane highway crossing the Plains is the way to go, whether it be 24, 36, 50, 160, etc.  Stop to see the small towns, the side attractions, and it is a great ride... versus the I-70 slab.
