Oil Filter Change (w/o the mess)
« on: August 07, 2005, 08:21:46 PM »

i) Has anyone figured out a way to change the oil filter without the old oil seeping in and around the oil cooler/frame/etc.??  My garage floor is a mess!!!!!!!!!!
ii) Is there anything I should know about changing the transmission fluid... i.e. is it as simple as draining, re-pluging, then filling??
THANK YOU  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Windy I've got what's left of a two liter soda bottle that is used as the tool for the oil change job.  Cut on the big end that it slides under the oil filter.  Leave it tilted "downhill" just a bit and the oil all collects in the neck.  The tranny drain is as you describe.  Just make sure you use the right plug.

Just remembered this.  Someone posted it before "The Incident" and all the posted images were lost.  I'd saved it to pass on to a few friends who had asked question before about what drained from where.  This was a really good pic.

Like 2lane, I've used a modified 2 liter bottle to catch the oil from the filter on previous bikes.  I'm thinking about buying a product from J&P that looks like it may work a little better - follow link   http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetail.aspx?PID=740-322&cs=Harley&GID=B62C86FA-C50F-4405-8114-9B8C541CC8FC&store=&page=&search=

As for the trans lube, it is pretty straight forward as you guessed.  One note:  the trans level is checked with the bike sitting level, while the engine oil is checked on the side stand.

NTHEWIND, here is another option for Oil Filter Change (w/o the mess) [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif].  It is from eGlideGoodies they say, "Change your Electra Glide oil and filter with NO MESS!"

I keep a roll of tin foil in my shop for oil changes.  I make a blanket like inverted tent under the filter and I find with the foil, I can get it up around the mount pretty nicely.  Double the foil for some added strenth and roll up the edges and it'll hold the amount of oil that comes out of your filter pretty nicely.  I've been doing this on my ultra and my seeg and I've not got a drop on my cooler or frame.

Does anyone know if the K&N 171C oil filter will fit and work on a 05 SEEG with a 103 engine? Thanks!

Solid flywheels would be more on the top of the list with less than 1 thou runout. :2vrolijk_21:

I use this and it works great. I did screw up the first time cuz I simply unscrewed the filter. Dumb move. If ya follow the "included instructions" (and who does that??? :drink:) after you put in the drain funnel, punch a hole in the top and bottom of the backend of the filter. Oil drains out into filter, have a beer, unscrew filter, no mess.
