Canadian dollar down - Bike prices up. What have U heard???
« on: October 27, 2008, 02:08:31 AM »

I Just got an email from a fellow in BC. Says because the Canadian dollar is on the slide that bike prices for us Canucks are on the rise, maybe even as much as 20%. That means The SERG I bought for $34,000 will now be $6800 more. And a CVO Ultra will be more than $50,000. And of course all those other shinies we need will cost more.

Anyone have information on this?

They will definitely be going up ,although by not that much. I am hearing aroung $4,500.00.One thing you will also see is the used market take a hike upwards as well.  When the dollar was at par and above there was roughly $2,500.00 differance.  Mind you, Trev Dealey gets his cut as well. Your 20% guess seems to be just about right considering the CND $ is now worth 0.78 compared to the green back!

The last time there was a price decrease the CND $ was sitting at $1.02, hence the 20%.

If the trend continues, there will be an increase Jan 1 for sure, however they maybe under pressure to move earlier.

Best advise is to buy NOW and sell later if possible, and you should make up for any additional taxes and then some.

Oh great, I just looked out the window and it's snowing here now!

More bad news.

I was talking to a buddy yesterday, he was at the stealership on saturday and it was the topic of the day.
I also heard a few weeks ago that HD was trying to increase Canadian allocations because of the drop in US sales. Until the sales south of the border increase I don't think the Canadian prices can go up 20%.
We have NOT seen the last of Canadian-US dollar changes. Our dollar is tied to the price of oil and when it goes up so will the dollar.

Off topic: bribe36 I heard you had some nasty weather the other day and Grizzly, where are you that you seen that evil white stuff.

I just received another email from a guy in Calgary. The dealer is already charging $2000 over MSRP "Because They Can" and now he's heard the increase will be more like 6 - 10 %.

And yes we did get a shot of winter on the weekend. -0 temps and snow. I know how you island folk like to check out our weather and laugh, I lived in Comox for six years in the '90s.

VI48,

In the last week Oil Prices have taken a s__t kicking, this pricing has a lot less influence on the Middle East as they can produce oil at about US $9.00 a barrel. Most of the Oil coming out of Alberta is heavy Oil with what is refereed to all-in-cash cost is US $43.00 to US $46.00 with operating costs from US $27 to US $33 a barrel and do not forget these barrel price are quoted in US Dollars so in Canadian Dollars Oil at US $77 equals apprx. CDN $92 a barrel.

In regards to nasty weather somewhere in Canada, right now in Calgary it is 62 deg. F and tomorrow it is supposed to be apprx. 66 deg f. Going for a ride before the snows come in.

So who out there doesn't think that Trev Canada will take full advantage of the exchange rate.  Have a look back and see how generously we have been treated in the past.  And yeah, I am waiting for a SERG to be delivered at the quoted price-LOOK FLYING PIG.  First post-start kicking

Hey bribe36

I lived in Edmonton until 1986 until I snapped and moved to the Island, I also worked in High Level area when I was young and stupid so I know what cold is, I just don't like it.

As for the the dealer in Calgary I hope the dollar goes back up and people pass by his shop.

Spoke to our dealer on Sunday on Vancouver Island.  So far prices have not gone up but they expect them to.  The figure being bounced around right now is 5%.   Harley needs to keep prices reasonable in Canada as we are still buying the bikes unlike the US.

I thought the exchange rate was on your side ? can you come down to the states and pick one up.

This time last year the Canadian dollar was worth more than the US dollar. $1.00 CDN dollar would get you $1.13 US. Lots of Canadians were rushing to the states buying cars, trucks, bikes, condos, everything. This proved to be bad for the local dealers, and our government, so they started to impose some restrictions. I tried to buy a road glide in Spokane in July and the dealer told me he could lose his dealership if he sold a new bike to a Canadian. I know there are ways for a Canadian to buy a new bike in the US, through a broker or some dealers far from the border.

Now the Canadian dollar is down, $1.00 CDN is worth $.77 US. When the Canadian prices for the 08/ 09 Harleys were set they were based on our dollar at the high rate, now they are being adjusted to reflect they lower Canadian dollar. This could be an increase of 10% or more. Check out the prices at H/D Canada and compare them to the prices listed on H/D USA, we are already paying thousands more.

Not sure about Harley politics, but the car companies have made great effort over the past year or two to try and get prices more in line with the US to stop the cross border buying.  With the 2009 models they had made a good effort to the point that now the Canadian car is a good price compared to a couple of years ago.

It could be argued that the Canadian car is now underpriced with the dramatic drop of the Canadian dollar.

I have wholesaled cars north to Canada during all of this time and that is now OVER.

The last two car I wholesaled were purchased a month ago and only picked up tonight.  The guy is taking them to the US auction tomorrow and expects to take a bath.  I have to give him kudos though as he followed through on his buy bid.

Maybe things will settle out in the next 6 months but who knows until the elections here are over and we have moved on.
