Tour paks
« on: October 29, 2008, 06:09:41 AM »

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 09 tour pak and older ones, not the bracket, just the pak. I see they have a model in the BOOK for 09 but I looked at them and can't see the difference.
reason is they don't have an 09 in the SERG colors so I need to custom paint, so then why not find an older one for a little less $ and paint it and then mount it up to the new hardware.

I don't think the TP is the challenge.  The docking hardware might be due to the increased fender width, so custom paint might not be the only "custom" you end up doing unless the MOCO already has something out with which to mount a TP on a new SERG.

Docking Hardware for the '09 TP is avaliable, and so are the  SE Colors on the TP,at least Orange and Silver, Can grab you a number if needed, Call Jenni....Greg

I think you are right. I've been trying to figure this out since I discovered that there was no full size available for mine and they want $1200.00 for a chopped one (plain to boot). I keep waiting for someone to try it and then jump in w/ a used one.

That might be enough information to begin sorting it out though.

If there is a chopped pak there is mounting hardware.

Is that mounting hardware is the same for all 09s regardless of tour pak size?

Are king paks for Ultra's in 09s all given 09 part numbers?

If the mounting hardware is the same for all 09 and if any standard Ultra King tour paks are carryovers you know that the prior King paks will fit on the rack available for your bikes.

Really hoping someone who knows jumps in. Comparing the various tour paks amongst the numerous years in the book it seems that basically it comes down to color differences between the primary, panel and pinstriping. One my '05 EG the bolts went through the metal pate, then tour pak, then the detachable plate and lastly the tube. There's no tubular support on the new detachable mount. Guess the real question is are the molds the same?

I have no idea if an older one could be made to fit a new touring bike, but I can tell you that it's supposed to be more adjustable.  The '08s had a two positions setup.  Two sets of holes in the bottom and that was it.  My understanding (I haven't looked to verify) is that the new ones over more adjustability by how they mount.

Obviously, even if you can get the old one to fit, it would require the new mounting hardware as the rear is fatter and depending on the model, does not have the support loop in the frame.

Ride Safe,

The difference is the color and the metal plate in the bottom.  It already has the holes for the 09 adapter plate.  Only chopped pack is available for the SERG.  And its $400 more than a standard chopped pack.  Material is the same as the last couple years.  Oh, and pray that it has no issues.  I might see my pack finally tomorrow.  It had a crack in the paint and spider-webbed on the top.  Company that paints the CVO colors wanted the whole thing back for repaint.  You dont get a new one.... they repaint you POS new one.  So now it is almost 6 weeks since the dealer sent it back.   Might miss another 4 day trip without my SE......

SB -

Rally sucks about what they're putting you through. As a short term though, we used the tour pak mount "nakid" and just bungied a soft bag to the detachable mount. Used in conjunction w/ the detachable backrest it was a suitable arrangement.

Ready, here it is 06' and older tour paks lights on side,07' to now lights on sides and wrap around back a lil . On lids the older ones the indentation on top goes right off the back of the lid on newer ones it indents down the back of the lid.  If you part number  is #######-06 and you have a 08 bike then parts from 06 to 08 will fit most of harley parts work that way the number on end of part number is year of last update. I think mounting hardware for 09 is only year it will fit but think older tour paks will still mount .just need the mounting hardware . good luck guys  JDO

Thanks much J.D. and all. Ok, I'm gonna try to score an '06 or later and make it work. Now just gotta find a painter.

I'm dam near as confused on the lowers. Lot's of them say for touring and some other seems not for Road Glide so I'm trying to wad through that. PITA
