09 SERG Trans Oil Change
« on: October 31, 2008, 02:37:45 PM »

What a mess, the drain plug does not line up with the hole in the cross member and the oil drains down the cross member making a mess, and this is with the bike on a table lift. Anyone else see this? Thinking of opening up the cross member drain access hole with a die grinder.  Thanks Doc

It's not just a SERG issue.
It's a new frame issue.

I just changed mine and put the Shockproof in it and your right.
Little hole... big mess.
I think next time I will stuff a rag between the crossmember and the cases.
But no way I would grind on the frame.
Product liability lawyers are just looking for those kind of excuses to keep from paying out a claim.

Buy more rags.

Can you stick some folded cardboard at the hole to funnel it below the frame? Not familiar with the new config, just throwing an idea out there! ;)

I think what's disappointing is the fact that the earlier bikes made it VERY easy to change the tranny oil with no mess.  If this were your 1st HD, you wouldn't know any better.  Most engineers don't think you ever have to work on anything.

Ultimately the bottom line is, it could have been done better.
But it wasn't and it is what it is.
I will stuff a rag between the cases and the frame next time and not look back.
It's no different from changing the filter and getting oil on parts below it.
It's the way it is and I make the best of it.
As Sadunbar said the other day, working on your own bike gives great satisfaction,
even if it's cleaning the mess you make.

Look at it this way, with the new extended drain intervals, you only need to make a mess every 20,000 miles or so.  Assuming you want to follow the recommended intervals, of course.

We use an oil vacuum in my shop on all our small engines and then drop the plug to remove any metal shavings , the vac realy gets 99% of the oil  I was  shocked that it did such a good job......

Skip

Maybe only 1% is all that leaks from the drain plug but that's still enough to make a mess.
I have one of those vacuum's, I used it on the boat!
