Here's One For The Books
« on: November 01, 2008, 10:09:18 AM »

I met up with my HOG group to go for a lunch ride and of course there's always time to look at each other's scooters before leaving.  One of my HOG members said, "What's that in your belt?"

At first I thought he was joking, but after looking at it carefully, something was wrong.  I decided to go directly home to see what it was.

It turned out to be a 7/16 nut had gotten caught between the belt and the pulley and actually punched right through the belt!  Believe it or not, it made NO NOISE while riding!

My Guardian Angel did her job that day!

Eat up the pulley any also?  And how anal did you get looking over the bike for any lost nuts before deciding it was just road debris :huepfenlol2: ?

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. You're fortunate you caught it before it snapped. Those Temporary belts they sell don't work (IMO) Anyway, H-D says that's a four hour job to replace the belt. It's that and a lot more if you've never pulled your primary apart AND, I wouldn't recommend anyone without a stout compressor and a 1/2" impact wrench even try it. I don't as a rule bitch about my H-D because it is what it is and it's not like anybody holds a gun to my head and forces me to buy one, but this is one area I wish the H-D engineers would look at. I have no ideas off the top of my head how this could be made easier to swap out, but having to take the entire primary apart seems excessive. You take your bike to a shop for a belt change and the labor triples the cost of parts easily. That just doesn't seem right for a maintenance item.

Two Lane:  It did NOT tear up the pulley.  The H-D mechanic tried to warn me that I may need to purchase the high dollar pulley too, but when he pulled it off, there was no damage.   :orange:

Rooster: Thanks but these pics were taken just before I got the new stickers.  Sharp eyes though!  :2vrolijk_21:

Spiderman:   You're right.  It cost me about $400 to have the belt changed and the Service Manager almost apologized for the cost, but he informed me of all the steps it takes to change a belt.  :o

Its called The Shaft Drive by my local wrench. When the motor goes wet I bet it will be just a shaft drive.  Doc

Amazing what strange things we find sucked in, stuck on, and spit out by our bikes.

My wife's '05 XL1200C had the belt come apart at 7500 miles. We rode in one evening and parked the bikes with no problems. The next morning when we got ready to leave for a parade with the H.O.G. chapter, her belt was cut clean into. Dealer warrantied it.

A few months ago, we were meeting friends at the dealership for a ride. I was running late and didn't do my usual walk-around. At the dealership, I spoke to another biker who was not riding with us. He pointed at my back tire and said, "You going ridin' on that?"

The center of the tire (ME880) was down to the belts. Just a week before, I had checked the tread depth and added pressure to the tire. In less than 100 miles of riding, I had open tread with belt fibers hanging out... weird.

Needless to say, we didn't ride that day. I just put the bike in for new tires and called it a day. Better than getting 100 miles out and having a flat. UGH!
