Problem with 110 engine
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:09:23 PM »

After buying my 09 SEultra and selling my 06 SE with the 103. The problems with the 110s with the 07's and 08's I had hoped they had fixed for 09. I had no problems with the 103 that was in my 06, it always ran great.
This weekend we rode to Las Vegas from San Diego. The trip up was great and the bike ran like a top, the new frame makes a noticealble difference, and I even enjoy the seat. It is the 1st stock seat I have liked in the 4 harleys I have owned. It was an extremely smooth ride, much smoother than the 06
The problem started as we came into Vegas and got in some traffic, the highway came to a stop. The temperature was probably in the mid 80's. I pushed the throttle forward to shut off the cyclinder as we were stopped and after a short time I thought the engine was going to come apart. It made the awfulest clattering sound I have ever heard. I didn't know what was going on. We started moving and as soon as we were rolling the noise stopped any all was back to normal. We turned onto Las Vegas blvd and got back in traffic and it did it again. I don't know what is up, but this is a problem. It is not even hot yet outside. What is this thing going to do when we roll across the desert in the summer and it is 115 outside, or get struck in a traffic jam. I am pretty pissed right now and don't know what to do or what is causing the problem except that it has to be associated with overheating as there was plenty of heat coming up as we sat still, alot hotter than the 103. I am second guessing myself on why I purchased the bike knowing there had been problems with this engine. We rode home this morning and the bike ran great the whole way home, it was in the low 50's as we left the desert and warmed up some as the morning went along. This bike is made for cruising down the freeway, it is a true touring machine Anyone have any suggestions, I am at a loss right now. I will be going to the dealer Tuesday to have them look it over, but I am going to be nervous that the bike is going to crap out on me sometime while sitting in traffic. It almost seems as the oil is not getting up into the engine hen I am idleing as it sounded like metal clattering, but I am not very mechanical and it is just a guess. The oil level was fine. I guess I should purchase one of those dipsticks that sell you what the oil temp is. I have to get this problem fixed. We do alot of traveling on the bikes, and I am going to be nervous everytime we ake off wondering what is going to happen along the way with the bike
Suggestions anyone?

WOW.  I'm betting HD is gonna say something like "That's just the way the bike sounds when the rear cylinder cuts out."  The clattering might be a valve spring clearance issue in your rocker boxes, but one would think you'd hear that constantly instead of only when your in heat management mode.

Best of luck to you when you take the scoot to your dealer, but be prepared for the standard "It's normal" answer.  If you truly believe the bike is flawed tho', be persistent.  Make them fix it.

I'm not trying to be mean........because I have self induced engine problems.........but I'm really glad I'm keeping my 06.  These new bikes seem like more trouble than they're worth.  JMHO.   :2vrolijk_21:

The 09 flhtcuse4 is the 1st bike I bought and then the extended warranty and may even keep in stock trim though I have a D&D 2-1 and sert sitting on the bench.

You are correct about highway sailing as it is a diffenr bike from the other 10 or so HD I have had.  This bike is also the wettest yet...One ride in 1100 miles without rain.

I think you can ask HD to disable the rear cylinder shut off option. Most of us with 07 and 08 never have it enabled and although our motors might get hot sometimes it doesn't cause that many problems.

I have an '07 Ultra SE witht he 110", and now an '09 with the 110".

When I first bought the '07 one of the first trips I took was riding to Vegas from Fresno. My bike did the exact same thing; went into Vegas traffic and immediately started making a racket with no power. I found out, that clattering is the engine going into "limp" mode, which it is supposed to do when overheating.

I came home, installed Bub Rinehart headers, a race tuner, then installed cooler burning plugs.  Also, most important, when riding in anything other than really inclement weather, I remove the leg fairings and those tinted side fairing wind deflectors. Both of those really block air circulation. Doing all these things, I now have 10,000 on the '07 and while it does run a bit warmer than the 103", it gets nowhere near as hot as it did that day. Even in winter when I put the leg fairings back on, the bike gives no hint of overheating. I have had the bike in only once for the gasket recall, otherwise it has been excellent. Also keep in mind, as the bike gets more mileage (over 1,000), it will run cooler yet.

Don't worry, take a few steps to help it run cooler and you'll be a happy camper.

Sounds like you may have broke the code on the 110 challenges.  Wonder would an additional oil cooler, like JAGG, help?

You can turn the "rear cylinder shutoff" on or off yourself on the 09's.  Just look in your manual it tells you how to do it.
Can't be sure what you are hearing but it definetly makes a different noise when the rear cylinder shuts down.
Mine shut down the rear cyl in traffic on 75 degree days.  Now with the cat gone and fulsacs and the SERT base map, it has never shut down since.  I don't know if it is the mods or the fact it is now colder riding temps.  I guess I will have to wait until next year when it gets above 75 again.

Chanman,

I installed cooler burning V-Rod plugs. Engine runs cooler and reduces pinging as well. Have had no problems, 10K miles now and installed the cooler plugs back at 750 miles.

Hope this helps,
