(3) SCREW FAIRING
« on: November 06, 2008, 10:44:27 AM »

The paint under the right and left star screw to the windshield is delaminating. Uhgggly  :-X  I recently had my recall completed last month with the dealership. Would the shop have taken off my fairing? Gotta ask now, as I may lose myself talking to them on the phone. Seems to me,  a power tool was used to tighten the screws and "over-tightened", cause the paint to delaminate. Warranty issue right?

BTW, anyone here from San Antonio? Going TDY this weekend and want to do a Sunday ride. Left messages with the HOG and the ALR but nothing coming back. There is however a dealership test ride of the 2009 models at Caliente HD as well as their 2nd anniversary.

It should defintely be a warranty issue, Techie, but it would be easier to simply install something like p/n 59133-99 windshield molding anyway? It finishes off the fairing very nicely. That stuff should be standard equipment! Get Cycle City to buy it for ya'!

It seems that paint cracking/lifting at the windshield screws has been fairly common on the CVO bikes over the years.  I personally believe it has to do with the extra paint film thickness on the "custom" paint jobs, along with overzealous tightening of the screws.  The first bit of advice I would give anyone removing and installing fairing screws is to use a simple nut driver (screw driver with a Torx bit) versus a Torx socket and wrench, to limit the amount of force applied.  The best approach is to use a torque wrench of course, but very few ever will.  The torque spec is only 25 - 30 inch pounds for the 3 windshield screws.

Happened on my '06 melon - paint delaminated.  You are correct to caution overtightening the windshield screws.  I use a screwdriver withthe T27 bit and just snug it up.

The chrome trim does help for than appearance's sake here.  Screws tightened against the trim have their load distributed across the metal plate rather than directly against the painted surface.  Every little bit helps.

This original post asked about warranty.

Three of my four are fine. (including the 09)

The 05 SEEG has that peeling problem.

Is there an easy fix?

Or does the outer fairing have to come off for a trip to the painter?

Had the same thing happen to mine, put the chrome piece on and don't worry about it anymore. :2vrolijk_21:

When it happened to mine I asked the dealer about it (warranty claim), but it wasn't covered. If you have ever changed your windshield then "when it happened" is debatable. I decided to get the chrome piece and forget about it.

No real easy fix Chip.  Either the chrome trim covers it and it's just not worried about or it's a trip to the painter.  Hopefully it's just a clearcoat issue.  But that varies from fairing to fairing when this happens.

that's easy for you to say.

Your the original owner.

You take care of your bike.

I think (not sure) the original owner of the SEEG has that original solid trim piece and removed it when sold.

The chrome trim with the slots is great but is shorter than the other piece.

Not much shorter but enough that the ends show maybe a 1/2" of fairing and that's where it's peeling.

That's my question, is there a easy fix to repair the clear coat on the ends?

Thanks Don, not the answer I was hoping for but "it is what it is".

And FYI I ordered that part from John today.

Thanks for all your help!

Kuryakyn Makes a chrome strip that has mirrors on both sides. Covers the paint delam and gets the mirrors off your bars. They look great and do not blur from vibration. Just a thought

Probably have to ask a painter that, but I would think they would be able to. For something that you could do at home that would make you or I happy I doubt there is something when it comes to paint defects. :nixweiss:
