We have several toy runs that we attend every year.

We also put on a toy run right here in our little town of Harrah.  We have a standing date:  The First Saturday of November..... This past Saturday, November 1st was this years event.

Our event is a little more than the typical toy run.  We have a bike run with cash prizes donated by a local bank.  We have a car and bike show - 79 cars entered in the car show and 41 bikes.

We have live music - Door prizes donated by local merchants - an auction with items donated by local merchants - and several food and merchandise vendors.

Everyone that attends must bring an unwrapped toy or make a cash donation.  This year we had two pick-up truck loads of toys and raised a little over $4200 dollars for a local group of ladies called the Helping Hearts.

The Helping Hearts ladies also collect food items via the postal carriers in our area.  Donation bags are mailed to everyone in our area and the postal carriers pick the bags up with donated nonperishable food items.

The Helping Hearts ladies then have the Helping Hearts Christmas Store on the second Saturday in December.  They identify families having financial trouble in our area through the local school system.  The Christmas Store is an "Invitation Only" opportunity for parents to come pick out toys for their children.  They are also given enough food for a Christmas dinner.

We ride our bikes to the Helping Hearts Christmas Store and help folks carry out their toys and food.  The Helping Hearts ladies usually help 100 to 150 families in our small town and the surrounding area.

I know similar events occur all around the country.... All because bikers care about kids!

I have lead the local chapter Teddy Bear Run which is an escorted parade for the last several year.  Also Course Marshall for the big Abate Run that benefit the area Shriners Hospital.  Love doing things that benefit the kids.

yep.  Have done many toy runs and they always are nerve-wracking due to a few crazy riders, irritated cages,  and a lot of inexperienced riders in a yo-yo parade.  I've seen a lot of wrecked scooters but I still do 'em cause it's for a good cause.  :) har!  spyder

I only support two charities... MDA and toy runs.  I can be a mean heartless SOB when it comes to adults, but kids and animals just can't help themselves.  My next toy run will be in Allentown on 11/22.  Sad thing is, I do enough of them I can't keep track which one is for which group.  Getting old.  Maybe an Alzheimer's run would be something to think about soon?

But I definetly agree that these things are getting crazier with the bad riding as a higher percentage of inexperienced riders participate.  Wish everyone would take some time to learn group ridding.  Oh well.

Ride Safe,

I go every year to the Salvation Army Toy Run here in Calgary -- even though I, like several others here, hate the idea of large group riding with a bunch of people who manage to scare the crap out of me with their "riding skills" !!

Childrens Hosp Toy run was Nov 2nd and I participated in going down and depositing toys,

but did not go with the procession (that is borderline nuts)  there were thousands of bikes staged at Penn's landing and even saw a

brigade of little (I mean 50cc to 100cc) Scooters. their helmets looked bigger than the bike.

It is a good event for a Great Cause.

I enjoy a good cause for a Toy Run but I really like the Toy Rides were you actually carry the toys on the bike and you get to hand them out to the kids. I have been on many Toy Rides that you never see the Toys or the Kids and it is so crowded that people are running into one another. Then when we get to the end of the ride it's how much can everyone drink and act stupid.

I stopped going to them a few years ago. Turned into "amateur" day! Too many crashes by inexperienced riders looking for an occasion to show off their bikes that usually never leave the neighborhood. Then they can't wait to drop off the presents and converge on all the local bars. Only thing worse than these amateurs showing off at the run, is them doing it at/after the bars!!! Skeery chit!!! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:
