Saddle Bag Guards
« on: August 15, 2005, 10:20:26 PM »

I am considering the "comfort" style saddle bag guards. Does anyone have any photos of them on a SEEG? Part 2: Are guards worth the money?

Part 1) Here ya go.

Part 2) You'd never ask if rear guards were worth the money if you ever saw a bike sliding away from you on its front and rear guards after it didn't just land on your leg.  Watching this from the vantage point of sliding on your butt following the bike makes it an easy choice from there on out.

After watching a dresser parked next to mine blow over in a bad thunder storm and sustained no damage, I ordered a set and put them on my SEEG.  The only reason my bike did not go over too, was the wind was pushing against the kickstand.  I took that as a warning from the motorcycle gods to put them on.

CEI, just in case you're still collecting parts don't forget that to complete the swap you also need to change the bars that are underneath the saddlebags.

In addition to the bars underneath, you also need two frame bolts under the seat and two bolts to connect the saddle bag guards to the support bracket.

Yeap, the bolts under the seat are pretty standard items though.  The dealers keep them in stock.  The others are long and skinny (unlike me) and I happened to have some screws in my toolbox to do the job.  These aren't structural supports though.  Just there to keep things from shaking apart.  So if the dealer doesn't have them then anything you can pick up from a hardware store will work.

If you're looking for an application so the dealer parts counter guy can look the bolts up just about any dresser is going to work.  Tell them to look up for a 2002 Road King (won't really matter).  The only reason you don't want to use some standard bolt for the bolts that hold the top of the crash bar to the top of the frame is that the stock bolt is quite a bit wider than a normal bolt head (more surface area) and is round (no flat or sharp edges to run on things).  The support bars beneath the saddlebag will be:

90781-93 Right Side
49194-85 Left Side

Even better is that for a Harley part they are suprisingly inexpensive.

Does anyone know if you can mount the side rails on the SEEG,
Item # 90839-94A.  Harley is saying I need to replace my bag filler strips with notched ones to use a side rail guard with the front bag guard Item # 49087-01.  I have seen some posts showing the side guard rails in here, just can't find them.  Can anyone fill me in before I order?  I have already ordered the front guard for the bags from crystal river, thought the trim rails would look good also. I have never seen a SEEG with side rails but I don't see any reason you could not add them.  Nothing radically different on these bike compared to a normal dresser.  I can tell you that you definitely need to replace your rear filler strips.  The side covers should be OK.

Watch ebay if you want I found a complete take off set for 100 from a new EG of the standard ones and have seen the comfort ones on there as well.  The bolts for the top under the seat were a couple of bucks from the local HD shop. JP [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
